Red, the other way to do it is to use the industrial technology that the interface box was designed for in the first place. This technology will continue to disappear very slowly as people replace their software with applications using HTML and TCP/IP, but for many people it works and it's reliable, why change? You use a one-port terminal/serial server from a company like Lantronix or Perle (or similar), which has a single serial port and an Ethernet port so you can connect with Ethernet and a little hub or switch.
The terminal server has enough intelligence that it can connect with the dyno box using RS232 or RS423 or whatever protocol is required (you still have to set it up with the right baud rate/stop bit type/protocol etc), and display the serial data on some sort of web page on your connected laptop. Not easy to set up the first time but rock solid, and you don't have to shop for an obsolete laptop and then try and find the right cable (yes, there are different RS232 cables).
I betcha Drikko could have done this once but hasn't done it in so long he's forgotten he was even able to do it. Cam and John Wilson could do it too, so could I, pity we're all a bit far away....
