Hi guys, this is my first Laverda that I bought a month ago from Alan Bell in Taunton.
Don't have any history, anyone know the 3C and have any idea why it's '78 registered?

Welcome to the Forum, beautiful 3C you have, you will find pretty much all you need to know about your Laverda right here, can get a little nutty sometimes, My 74 3C wasn't sold till 75 and that's how it was registered, maybe that's what happened with yours, Enjoy the ride, Cheers

The 3c was still available after September ‘75, when the 3CL started production.
The engine number would be right for a later
Yes, the public would have preferred the newer stuff not to mention the fastest production bike in the world.
Not many people in the UK would have wanted a 3C in 78.

Lovely machine! Welcome to the collective. I cannot give you any details about UK registration ‘irregularities’ but the engine number does put that kind of late ‘77 production.

Pay no mention to above furrowed eye brow comments on the machine, there is incredible knowledge on this forum even if you have to peel back growly nature to see it.

Bitsa. The engine # puts it well into 3CL territory, which would explain the registration date. Wire wheels were oh-so-yesterday in '78... Either the engine has been swapped, or a 3CL has been pimped. Lots of hints to be found on the frame if that were the case. The seamed Lafranconi silencers were never fitted to the 1000 triples.

Mmmm wots going on with the primary cover to crankcase adjacent to the motor serial number? Be a nice ride for something new to new owner, well done you... none but the brave, a grin here. j

Matching frame and engine number. What are the differences between the 3C and 3CL frames.
Love the bike on wires 😋

3C has provision for a rear brake cable for a start with eventually a cross over provision for the foot controls.
Different location for the ancillaries such as regulator, fuse box etc.
Early 3CL had Ceriani fork and clamps, then Marzocchi.
Early 3C had no oil radiator.
Did the 3CL have the frame mounted choke lever?

Biggest difference are the bracketry for the rear brake MC, hinges and lock for flip-up seat. Even if removed, the dimple for the seat lock pin usually remains.

For the doom mongers, and anyone else interested, late 3c frames had the bits to allow fitment of an RHS rear brake lever.
Unsurprisingly, Aitch's frame has those fittings, see below:

Rather than opinion, which has, previously, been expressed to me in respect of mine. "That's not right! Someone's altered that, it's not original."
I broke mine out of the crate, so I know it is.

Oil cooler looks right, too.

QED.

Looks like a great bike to ride and enjoy. So many bikes have been through dealers and workshops that ‘borrowed’ parts from one bike for another, not to mention owner modifications, originality becomes a bit irrelevant to most. Give it some thrutch!
