Costs too much to print and distribute apparently ....... Compares a 120 degree Jota against a Kat and CB1100R ; nice mail from a reader about a visit to Richard Slater ; and £7000 worth of rebuilt Mirage motor gets slotted into nice shiny rolling chassis and gets fired up ........

And that`s it .... end , finish , finito ....... no more sitting down on a Saturday morning with a sausage and bacon roll and a can of cherry coke to read what used to be the best remaining monthly bike mag ........ What a bummer .........
 
Yes, you’re right. A real tragedy that there closing it down. Bloody good read every month.Sad to see it go☹️👎

The only mag that I subscribe to and also the mag that's featured a few of my Laverdas over the years.
Written and edited by a good bunch of blokes too, but sadly the bean counters are the ones with the final say....😕
 
All in line with the current trend of print media slowly disappearing, the majority of Joe Public is quite intent on staring at their "smart"phones and making themselves ever more dependant on same, which all plays into the hands of Big Tech and Advertising.

Spreading advertising (the No.1 reason for which most magazines are created) digitally is far cheaper than printing, the profits are immense.

Sorry Paul , just laziness on my behalf ........ ( although it has been mentioned here before ref the abandoned in a garden for 30 years 1200 Mirage rescue and rebuild ) ........ now we will never see the conclusion of that story .... pity .......

I’ll be the contrarian now and say that I like digital magazines, I read them on an iPad mini with a high resolution screen and don’t see any drawbacks. I’ve been doing this for a few years now and I wish more content was available in this format. Classic and Sportscars has many years of back issues digitized and I get Motorcycle News every week. C&SC have their own app, but now I am using PocketMags and find that to be a good format.

That`s fair enough , but unless you go to the trouble of printing it all off , once you hit the Delete / Move to Bin or whatever button , it`s gone ..... lost for ever ....... with printed matter , it`s a permanent resource , there for ever ........ something you can then post onto Archive Stuff to remind , surprise , and annoy people with for example ........ I know a lot of things are available on -screen , but unless you take the trouble to save it , there`s no guarantee it`s always going to be there ..... ( ...that`s what I think anyway ....... :) .... ) ......
 
You don’t have to save anything. It downloads, you read it and unless you actively delete it it’s always there waiting for you. If you want to free up space, you archive and delete, it is then just waiting for you to open it up again whereupon it downloads again for you to read. I don’t bother to do this with C&SC, but I do with the weekly MCN. You can delete permanently if you want and I may decide to do this with MCN eventually as I doubt I will ever open any back issues again.
Memory is so cheap when buying devices that I always buy the maximum capacity available and have never run out of space. I have movies, audiobooks, thousands of songs, Kindle books etc in my phone and my iPad. I also read four newspapers everyday online (Los Angeles, Washington, New York and Guardian) and have done so for at least five years. No more blackened fingers from the cheap ink they use and no more paper waste either.

It's always going to be there, somewhere... the problem is finding it again. If it's truely lost, the internet is falling apart!

I prefer pulling out a bound year of Classic Bike for reference, but even then, it's often difficult/time consuming finding a particular article. Print mags mostly refrain from issuing an index at the end of the year. Nice for browsing, though.

Again , this is true , and each to his own ........ It`s just to me something tangible , which is there in a physical form is always going to be more permanent than something that lies behind a glass or plastic screen .....

I also subscribe to Classic Bike , which is published by the same people as Practical Sportbikes , Journalist Alan Seeley contributes to both publications ...... not quite the same as PS of course , sometimes think I`ll cancel it , but then the latest issue arrives and I find I enjoy it more than I thought ......

Also subscribe to Classic Mechanics ......... like to keep supporting them , ........... I actually look forward to the rattle of the letterbox , the sound of the thud on the hallway floor , ripping open the envelope , the smell of newly printed paper and the feel of the delicate , fresh pages sliding smoothly between your eager , expectant , fingertips for the very first time ....... ( sorry , started to get a bit carried away there ) ...... once they disappear then they`re gone forever .......

It is the way everything is going. Forget your bookshelves, get an ibook, and if you are really clever you can share that great novel, but not like a paper novel that you can give someone to read and pass on. My old AMCN mags used to go to the local bush cafe, super popular with passing riders. Could leave an ipad there now?
I recorded our entire cd collection to a hard drive but my phone will only let me play ones that are their format.
That black memory stick at the start of 2001 is looking very real. All the world's knowledge in some un-decipherable format.
 
T'is a source of discord between the missus and myself.
She reads a lot, up to a book a day and reads on a tablet.
I read a lot less but still amass books which displeases the afore mentioned missus.

I just started reading yesterday a book on Woodrow Wilson's mental health. Wilson, after having participated in their writing, refused to sign the Versailles documents. They included an alliance between France, the UK and the US implying that if any of them was attacked, the others would automatically respond. That would have changed the course of the 20th century.
The book is based on the writings of William Bullit who didn't miss much as far as international diplomacy is concerned in the first half of the 20th century. Bullit notably exchanged at length with Freud concerning the mental health of Wilson and of the safeguards necessary concerning the health of any world leader in a democracy.

Should make fascinating reading. The book is coming out in English at the moment, author Patrick Weil.
