No spark diagnostics

So did a lot of mundane stuff this morning like testing a new earth for all the wires in the headlight, checking the horn potential bad earth and removing the starter relay connectors and cleaning rust off them. No change.

Anyway went back to Coils and I am positive that there is a problem with the double coil.

Why? Well...

1. Single coil DOES spark strongly.

2. Double coil sounds like it sparks but DOES NOT actually visibly spark

(Note I have tried this with the coils isolated from the bike and not.)

3. I then switch the wires (power and trigger) around completely so the Double coil has the wires from the single coil and the double coil has the wires from the single. Double DOES NOT spark and Single DOES.

(Note I've also tried leaving the supply wires to the coils as is also in this test, and I've eliminated the HT leads as the problem)

So there is literally only ONE thing it can be which is the double coil. Do you agree? If not please tell me why?

Not sure whether I am chasing the original fault here but this is definitely the point of failure.

EDIT: Anywhere on a Sunday in Oz I can buy a suitable replacement coil ? Improvise?

That's about as positive a test as your going to get without fitting a new double ended, no not one of those, COIL.

to complete the circuit on a double coil both HT Leads need to be earthed out from what I understand
spark travels down one HT lead, jumps the gap, earths across to the 2nd HT lead and jumps the gap from the outside of the plug to the electrode and then back to the coil
when testing have both plugs earthed or the coil will not work correctly

Ok will run the test again. Thanks for that.

Ok so ran the test again with both leads with plugs in and earthed to engine.

The result was slightly different but ultimately the same result.

There is SOMETIMES a spark and sometimes not - it sparks approximately 30% of the time.

The fault is still isolated to the double coil.

Have you looked at the HT leads on that coil?
Earthing of the coil?
Removed it and refitted it?
Remove plug caps, snip 1cm off the end of the HT leads and refit the caps.
I would be looking at every aspect of that coil now.

So I get a phone call this morning. "There is someone on Faceache chasing coils for a Laverda" "Fucking Carlo" I reply. "How did you know?"  - yeah, like who else.

How do you earth the coil? Other than through the plugs
?
Dumb

Removed, refitted and swapped to no avail so would suggest leads OK.

I did warn Rob when he said he was going to call someone 😂😂😂

The unit is sealed and apart from looking a little worse for wear (probably due to the heating it got a few days ago)

If you want to spend cash go DYNATEK, if a cheapskate go to the wreckers and get suitable coils off a twin and a single.

And that phone call in the middle of my expensive hangover just cost you a heap on your paintwork

.

Are TEK or DYNA bricks and mortar stores or online.

Or just buy another Nology from Red, plug and play.
Just make sure the rats nest wiring is sorted first.

There brand names of  coils , lots used old coils from wrecked Kawasaki 250s . I have a pair of  Nology Coils I bought from Red, I think he sells another brand now. I was covering all bases to remove any potential reliability issues when I bought them after I was having bike problems.

I've emailed Red for a set but I will.take yours as well - you anywhere near Chippendale, NSW?

Did both coils get hot, you need to find out why that happened. It also happened to my bike when I had Johns IIS ignition fitted, 10 years trouble free and then this happened. That had a fail safe that should have stopped this but the fail safe failed. John fixed it but by then I was clearing the decks of any potential future issues. I would be surprised if your ignition didnt have this cut out when you leave the key switched on for a long time and the coil continues to be energised and get to hot, my problem back then. I have the same ignition as you now and its been great.
I dont have any coils for sale, I was just saying what's in my bike.
