oil cooler and horns

hi!

One of the modifications previous owners did to my 1000/1 was the oil cooler and the horns. I have been researching a bit, and I have seen there were many combinations of horns positions, types, and also oil coolers.

Would you help me sending a photo or explanation about what would be appropriate (original) for mine? my frame number is: 2182 I guess it will be hard to find an original oil cooler, but I guess there will be some very similar aftermarket models. I think the voxbells horn are easy to find.

Regards,
Miguel

The Voxbell horns are still available new from the usual suppliers for Italian bikes. You'll find them with Google.

The early 3C had the horns mounted on the oil cooler. The cooler had a threaded socket welded onto each side that the horn mounting tabs bolted to. I believe there were problems with the oil cooler cracking around those mountings, so the horns were moved on later models.

Your engine/frame number indicates an early model that had oil cooler mounted horns like the one in the attached photo (my brother's bike - has never cracked around the horn mounts). Sorry about the photo quality, but it's the only one I have that shows the oil cooler and horns.  I think you'll be lucky to find one of those early oil coolers with the horn mounts unless someone on this forum has one for sale.

Oil coolers on the later bikes didn't have the horn mounting sockets on them. If all you can find is a later oil cooler, but you want to replicate the earlier one, then I suppose you could make some threaded sockets (I think they're M8 thread) and silver solder them onto it.

Cheers,
Cam

I have 2098. Horns are mounted on the bottom fork clamp though I'm not certain that's original though no doubt sturdier. Radiator had been changed for a later type.

Hi Dellortoman,

forgot to mention that my bike despite having a non standard oil cooler, it still had the three silent blocks that held the cooler support, does it help to find out the right type? or the earlier ones had also the same bracket with those 3 silentblocks?

Early 3Cs didn"t have an oil cooler ;)

Yes that's true, I think they started within the last numbers close to 2000 frame number, so mine was one of the first having it, so far i think they were two version. First one with horns attached to the oil cooler, and second, with the horns attached to the engine mounting plates. Probably as SFC28 says, to mount the oil cooler with silentblocks...?

May be this last option would be the cleanest for me, use the oil cooler holder with silentblocks and lateral horn on the engine brackets..

This is what you should be looking for. Good news is that I have a spare, bad news is that they were used on Elettronica SFCs, which makes them very sought after..

They are out there
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Laverda-1000-3C-Oil-Cooler/254387417539?hash=item3b3aabf1c3:g:QAkAAOSwApRdomfp&frcectupt=true

My 3c 2138 has the newer oil cooler so I just mounted them of the triangle engine mounting plates, more out of the way in my opinion.
Its all personal, no one is going to send you to Coventry no matter where you put them.

Is the oil cooler unique to Laverda?
My 3c cooler (not for sale) has raised 'paini' lettering on the top.

That?s the one, yes.

Yes they seem to be unique to Laverda, at least I never saw them on other machines.
The later aluminium ones were also used on the Citro?n 2CV, those can be found dirt cheap!

Mine is 1907 - so very early one with oil cooler ...

Hi Miguel your bike may have had the horns supported off the spiggots on the side of the oil cooler.
These become problematic has the vibration destroyed the oil cooler with the shaking of the horns.
I have mine mounted like Joes *no broken oil cooler).

not cheap Marnix, not cheapo at all, very expensive and highly sought after by 2CV nutheads and incorrect, the ones you are talking about came from the Citroen Dyanne 6, pictures shows as removed from car, the tails get shortened down to stubs, and a pipe ring rolled in

unit in pictures is for sale

The oil cooler on my #2057 was chrome, with the two horn mounts, out of the crate in the 1970s. The chrome cooler was delicate and leaked oil slightly. I replaced it. Still have the chrome cooler on the shelf if you want it.
