oil cooler and horns

Here's how the horns and oil cooler (later version, as per Gert's pic) are mounted on the later 3C's.
The oil cooler is mounted on upper and lower cross members that are welded between the two frame down tubes.

Laverda realized the horn mounts on the oil cooler was not a good idea, long term. It would crack the cooler. They provided a bow-tie bracket to move the horns under the headlight. That was a good idea long term. Wolfgang has several crates of those Laverda horn brackets if anyone needs one.

Is this the leaf green?? Its beautiful!

Ok! I think I found already a couples of offers for an early cooler, the ones attached to the frame with a lower silentblock und upoer to the direccion stopper woth another two silents. Then I will see wether I mount the horn below the headlight (preferred option) or on the sides...

Thank you all for your inputs, it is pretty amazing how easy is too get so much information so quick!

not cheap Marnix, not cheapo at all, very expensive and highly sought after by 2CV nutheads and incorrect, the ones you are talking about came from the Citroen Dyanne 6, pictures shows as removed from car, the tails get shortened down to stubs, and a pipe ring rolled in

unit in pictures is for sale

Plundre Ebay and get rich quickly then Clem! The first ones I see are ? 26 and ? 29!

I have mounted an early type cooler on my 3C without the horns so have a later type for sale if anybody is interested (in subsidising the expensive necessity of restoring these contraptions).

Correct... did I listen to MT when I got the Red 3C many moons ago nope... left the horns on the cooler until it cracked at the top bracket.. then lesson learnt ..........now they are at the front under the headlight where god had intended ( or moved them to )
So if you are gunna ride your bike then suggest you either mount them under the head light or on the engine mount bolts and not the cooler.
Though it does look cool there I just say but my stable gets used so well needs to be practical.

out of date again, I base what I said on my findings of three years ago when I tried to buy one, new ones were EXTREMELY expensive and used ones about half, it seems that the 2CV and Dianne 6 coolers are very similar, but at that time the Dianne 6 type was not recognised as expensive, like our own bikes the 2CV market has dropped, and Marnix is correct, they are cheap so buy now, easy to modify but for one thing, the aluminium tubes do not fit any of the Kingley flairing (*) tools that I have for forming the olive.

CLEM
* a Kingley flairing tool is an item that is inserted up the tube, and when twisted with its tommy bar, has a ball bearing that climbs a ramp and produces from the inside a rounded raised profile, remember to put the nut on first!

A chromed cooler must be really cool...😂 but you said it leaked?? Probably fixing it is difficult...

Miguel

I really wanted to fix the original cooler. It would of been very difficult cutting the side tank off and soldering/pinching off the offending channel then welding the side tank back on then re-chroming the cooler.

Why Laverda chromed the oil coolers is a bit of a mystery. It was expensive to do. Black paint is cheaper. Chrome plating has a reputation dropping the fatigue strength of steel and increasing crack propagation. Not a good combination on the thin oil channels in the cooler.

It looks very cool..very 1970s

The 2CV4 cooler is slightly smaller than the 2CV6 or Dyane coolers, which are more-or-less a straight replacement for the later Laverda coolers.  The 4-cylinder Citroen GS and GSA models had an even larger cooler in the same style, might be useful as an unobtrusive upgrade.

making a quick search on google, I see that the mounting for the 2cv oil cooler doesn't have the same plates as the early 3C, so theoretically it can't be used without an odd modification... isn't it? However they look exactly the same as later 3CL with this bigger clamp
