Yes Quentin -  we can hear it fire up from our house - when the Canadian Lancaster came over to "visit" the English Lanc - which is based at RAF Conningsby ( a few miles away from here) they practised along a flight path over the area we exercise our dogs - the noise shook the air. Often when the  Lanc displays at EK it turns right over our house - noise is incredible!  Also when the Canadian lanc was here they overflew the EK "terrestial" Lanc  whilst it was taxiing- so there were 12 Merlins firing together - actually it was 11 with one Griffon (I think) engine as the Canadian one had had to borrow an engine in England as its own one had gone tits up getting here! - Lincolnshire is known as "Bomber County" ! - Regards - Phil
Only Merlins I've ever heard were in a couple of hydroplane racing boats here in Oz in the late 60s, Stampede and Assassin - the rooster tails they sent out were amazing and the noise enough to excite any teenage boof'ead. Of course, there was a hotrod little buzzing thing with stink-hot horrible sounding two-stroke outboards on it that blew them both away! Bit like the demise of British four-strokes with the 'Asian stroker invasion'  :D

I have 4
2 in the shed
1971 bsa a65 lightning in.bits
1973 Triumph TR5T just need a couple bits from the UK to arrive.

Soon to be joining them:
The laverda 1200 as per the for sale thread
1978 Kawasaki z1000
The last two I seem to have forgotten to tell the GF of their impending arrival...I am hoping they will get here when she's out the country in sept so I can deny all knowledge of them :D

I think that's enough for me tbh.

Lucky Kaiser bought his part- Merlin engined bike to the Queensland Laverda concours in the early 90s. My triple was parked next to it and when he started the Merlin up the Lav started moving across the ground on the centre stand.

I really enjoyed a brand new 69 650 Bonny then a 70 750 Commando but a 71 Breganzie 750 SF0 lasted.

Love Triumph's and Norton's but Good Luck Starting them.

I guess a lot of it is down to how big a space you have to keep them! Trouble is no matter how big the space is it is never big enough....
