Aghh!  Who hasn't been here (or near here ...) at some time or other.  But it's why we love Massimo, is it not?

Thanks for the post, Jo!  (bigthumb)

That was a great read, Jo. Racing in the fog???!!!  :-\. Man, that is truly insane.

I really loved the way he hated the bike to start with but absolutely gelled with it once he 'felt' it out. SFs are like that - so confidence inspiring and forgiving when you ride the wheels off them. Had to laugh at the comments about moving the bars back!! SFC's personified.

From conversations with my colleague I know from Claudio, I can second what Marnix mentioned above, he?s really sorry ?bout missing action pictures:
?However, I still can't find any photos of me in the curve fight with the Laverda gods.?

And further he is philosophizing why his text has been translated in so many languages ? but never in Italian:

?Only now do I understand more and more why my story was translated into umpteen languages and printed so often but NOT in ITALY!
According to the Italian way and particularly how men thinks there, I should never have written that I ?drove past the works racing drivers several times? ...

I was clearly too young to participate in the 1st Laverda outing in Oss, I?ve no clue how it was to race there in the fog.

But later in 1985 at the 24hrs of Spa-Francorchamps I remember the race was paused for 4hrs in the night due to fog:

who ever thinks to be fast should go to the Bikers classics and watch the 4 hours race when darkness sets in. I can't ride anywhere near that fast when sun is shining and everything is perfect, I am just not brave enough :-[...  Seeing the guys dive down to Eau Rouge and up the hill, fighting for tenth of a second is something that scares the hell out of me.

Besides that, who has ever sat on a 750 SFC first series and has tried to even ride it for some kilometers knows what torture those guys in the 60th went through. I couldn't do that for more than a round or two, not mentioning doing that fast... ::)

Like an unfortunately passed away friend of mine said after he rode a modern bike and stood aside of his SF1: "Why the hell am I doing this to me...??"

But then.... the vibrations.... the sound... the look... for a bike of their time, they are just great bikes. Never compare them to modern stuff though...

The Spa 24hr race was often interrupted due to fog creeping in during the night, think I experienced it at least three times!

Watching a le Mans re-start at 3 in the morning is spine-chillingly eery, to say the least!

Massimo used to tell a story about Hans Hutten riding in fog. Is that the one.

When asked by Massimo why his lap times were the same fog or not, Hutten replied that he was so short sighted that he'd got used to counting off time from one corner to the next, so fog or not, it was the same.

brilliant article, had to read it twice, I can almost here Christiannes voice coming over in the script, I have never seen it before and thoroughly enjoyed it.
