all of mine are, too... but we had 2 neighbors having a relation, which ended up in both couples split, both houses sold and - the most important part - all 4 children having trouble with it...  >:(

Everywhere I go in the Middle East and SE Asia, people are all tap tap tapping away on their phones or whatever other device they have. They aren't all on Facebook all of the time. They have a huge resource of information to them and hopefully, slowly but surely, the majority will see that it actually is better over on the other side away from fundamentalism.

Information is power and for sure the internet will just get bigger and better and smart phones cheaper too.

They had arithmetic before we could count, we still use their numerals.  They built large cities with brick buildings while most Europeans lived in caves or bark huts.  They were educated in medicine while European witches would scatter a handfull of bones...  Gunpowder and paper came from a bit further east, reckon the list is endless. 

A bit prententious saying the western world is the hub of development.

:o I just looked up my King James Bible, looked at a picture of Christ  :o surely you're not telling me that the pictures of Christ I see are incorrect? They depict an anglo/white man with blonde hair and beard. >:( I fear I've been hood winked by the Europeans.

My point is: Most of these writings, be they Christian or otherwise, are modified to suit the immediate audience, in an attempt to create some relevance.

I like the Aussie aboriginals stories painted on walls of caves: Like the one where the crocodile bites a blokes head off. Still on the wall today and reminds everyone that sees it: Do not go near the crocodiles, they'll bite your head off. No further modifications needed, remains relevant 2 million years later.

Hmm, that's not entirely accurate - the brick cities were in Mesopotamia & Persia, pre-Arab conquest so not the result of Islamic knowledge.

The arithmetic & numerals were nicked from the Indians (possibly via the Persians)

That's not to say that we're not massively indebted to them for a lot of our knowledge, the scholars of Baghdad, Mosul, Cairo etc saved an awful lot of prior knowledge that would otherwise have been lost and the same scholars did a lot of valuable work as well.

I do remember an archaeologist, specialising in the early medieval period, who used to get very upset at people using the phrase "Dark Ages" with regards to Western Europe - she seemed to think it's a hugely inaccurate term
 
I tell my kids this nearly every day. Stop looking for a reason to fight each other and start looking for a reason to enjoy yourselves together. Works for an hour or two until someone gets whacked again.

Humans are all the same it's just learning how to stop the dickheads controlling you.

It was the Arab bloke in the video posted by Henry who said the Arabs need to learn from western cutures. I think he has a good point.

Yes, they had some technology a thousand or more years ago, but he reckons their culture and technology has been stagnant since the middle ages. According to the guy in the video, there has been bugger-all evolution in Arab thinking for milennia because at some stage they decided they knew everything so had nothing further to learn.

What social reform, technology, or cultural enlightenment has come from Arab culture since medieval times? Not much if any.
OK, there's been some cutting-edge architecture in places like Dubai, but it's developed from advances in materials and engineering that came from western cultures.

Stoning to death (usually for adultery) is still a legal form of punishment in many Arab countries, and is often applied to victims of rape FFS. That kind of medieval culture has no place in the modern world.

In my opinion, people who violently defend Islamic law (or any philosophy for that matter, religious or secular) are only defending ignorance. They need to stop the rest of the rest of the world from thinking because their own doctrines won't stand up to intelligent scrutiny.

BTW, what we call Arabic numerals are not Arabic at all. Arabs call them Hindu numbers because they came from India.

Trust me. I've been going to the Middle East regularly since 1977 when I first went there in the oil industry. If it wasn't for Western influence, business and technology, the Arabs would still be riding camels, living in tents surrounded by squalor. Many millions still do.......... :o

PS: The Arab guy in Henry's vid is the most free thinking and astute Arab I have ever heard. He is absolutely spot on in his interview. Unfortunately most other educated Arabs want to keep the uneducated masses in the Dark Ages to protect their own status/positions.

Which is why they got the shits in the first place. The West has been fucking around with their boundaries, their governments and exploiting their most valuable asset ever since we invented the combustion engine. In the end it's all intellectual drivel about the historical influence of Islam on the West. No one gives a shit but we all sure understand that a pack of ruthless bastards is ready to kill any or all of us and the reason is because the West has gotten rich off their backs and we don't really give a crap...... except when they kill a few of us. All societies are riddled with corrupt pricks, theirs is and so is ours. There are just more of them who are pissed off at the moment, which is why we're having this discussion. In a year or two it'll all be last decades news and the Indians will be caught with their pants down plotting their intentions to invade Australia.  :o
