I was travelling the Bylong Valley Way, heading north towards Sandy Hollow. For some reason I decided to look at the map in the tankbag window, when I ooked up I realised the road was heading right while I was going straight ahead towards gGrowee Gulph. Taught me a lesson about when to consult maps - only at a standstill!

Like I said, GPS can be a safety feature.

I've had this sort of thing happen quite often, even a quick glance can be enough to get you into serious trouble.

Drives me nuts in films where the driver is looking across and talking to the passenger for an inordinate amount of time. Try it when you're driving some time - just not possible if you want to stay alive!

Makes me nervous when I am that passenger, and the driver insists on turning their head towards me during conversation. Just not necessary.

I was with a guy once who not only had to look at me but gesticulate with both hands at the same time while driving in traffic. I was freaking out watching the road.
Distraction from screens is now a major discussion point amongst road safety authorities.
Stopping to check a map then getting back into the traffic, doing corrective u-turns etc all increases risk. We all have to use the simplest thing that works for us.
 
Not long before I retired, I did some engineering consulting work in Malaysia. The bloke who ran the company I was working for was a really nice guy called Hassan. I like Hassan a lot and we still keep in touch socially. But he was (probably still is) a bloody scary driver. He drove a Proton Wira (every second car in Malaysia is a Proton) while trying to run his office at the same time. He'd be phoning people on one of his two mobile phones (no hands-free installation) while shuffling and reading papers in his lap and juggling 2 pairs of glasses (reading and driving glasses) - all at the same time. Sometimes he'd be juggling 4 things in his hands at once, and that's not including the steering wheel. Then he'd ask me to pass him his brief case so he could rummage around in that for documents as well. All while travelling along the motorway at 100kph or more. I used to dread refreshment stops because he'd grab food and a coffee to take away, and juggle that with all the other stuff as well! His eyesight was such that when he had his reading glasses on, the road ahead of him was just a blur. It was a bloody nightmare. I offered to take over driving duty several times, but he would have none of that. His attitude was that I was a guest in his country, and I shouldn't have to drive myself around. I'm surprised he's still alive and even more surprised that he's never had a crash. He's a Muslim. I guess Allah is looking after him.
