rear brake cable GT

I'd guess you might have just started with the wrong cable from the beginning. Your GT is a 1973 build, same as my 3C. I'd take a bet for a vino rosso at Breganze, that both bikes should have been fitted with identical rear brake cables ex factory. Hard to imagine that a rather small manufacturer like Laverda could afford such atrocities like different cable lenghts on otherwise identical setups.

In case I'm right, your looking for a cable with 62cm length from tip to tip, cable sleeve with 36.5 cm length including the pressed on endcaps, and an adjuster with overall length of 5.5 cm.

Think you"ve cracked it Stefan,  a quick measure this morning (slight curve on my cable) is showing 67cm,41.5cm and 5.5cm respectivley .

Many thanks for your time on this.

Useful info, thanks Stefan.

Bit off topic, but can anyone provide a reference for the rear brake linings?    The only data I have is what Wolfgang told me, namely that they need to be 'soft'.

Tom

I have installed Newfren GF0182 (brake shoes) and they are working well. Bought them in 2011, not sure wether they are still available. With respect to replacing the linings only, Piet wrote somewhere over here that he is using elevator brake linings to reline the shoes with good results.

But is the problem the overall length of the cable or the amount of free length of inner?

I think the amount of free lenght is the problem, and it is indeed strange, that the additional 5cm in overall length on LJ's cable is entirely taken up by the 5 cm longer cable sleeve, so should have finally the same free length of inner as found on my 3C cable?

LJ, have you checked the brake pedal shaft and it's surroundings? Hopefully nothing has started to shear off around there...

well Pauls remark is  correct, 3C has a shorter swinging arm I ve been reliably informed, longer one on GTs SFs so we will look at adjustment on the brake plate.I ll get there in the end!

If you have the same brake at the front you could prop your rear wheel up next to the front and connect the front cable to it and see if you can get proper adjustment. Going back to my first reply why don't you just make a spacer to take up some of the slack.
