Rear Shocks

Gas charged dampers I've rebuilt are oil damped and have either a bladder/diaphragm or a floating piston separating the nitrogen from the oil. The high pressure (140psi?) prevents the oil from aerating so that the damper operation stays consistent and nitrogen is used because it is inert. I've only done unsealed units fitted with a Shraeder valve. Some are sealed and require drilling to release the gas, others have a screw and need a special adapter to fill; I don't touch them. As long as seals etc are available they are very simple if you are methodical and can improvise with tools. Ones with flexible hose to the reservoir it pays to mark the angle for refitting. Try to get oil spec, usually 2.5wt. Only hassle for me was getting a shop to refill the nitrogen, wanted heaps and I know how little the gas costs.
They look like Mulholland on the RGS.

S&W fron the same vintage shouldn't be any different, I'm assuming!!

From what I've heard, they used odd shaft sizes so you just can't get seals that fit. You certainly never see refurbed ones around, and they used to be very common in the 70s, I had several sets for chookchasers.

Hi Motoddrob - Just noticed this thread - the Mkl-lll Motodds use (I think ) a 275mm c/c shock - we initially used a Spax unit to keep prices down, but Waddon Engineering were just down the road from us and seemed hell bent on going bust - I was told it was just a tax loss operation anyway. I can't disclose how little we paid for the De Carbon units, but cash spoke and we got bargains at silly money.
I think the WP units came from Harris - to be honest I can't recall supplying them in the kits - got the springs from WP though.
The Fontana units asked about earlier were hand made units  - great quality and performance, but a bit past their sell by date now - the "FAC" stands for "Fabbrica Ammortizzatori Cremona" - literaly "Cremona shock absorber works" - it was not much more than an old boy in a shed - Hope this is of interest - Phil

275mm shock?

Dunno if any of the Motodd mafia would be interested but I've got, for reasons too complex to go into right now, an unused Fournales mono-shock underneath this here office desk. It just happens to be 275mm long with a bush at the top & a clevis at the bum end.

Anyone fancy a high quality shock for much cheapness?

I hadn't seen any of these until I bought Phil's old RGS....lovely things. When I broke the bike up I gave 'em to Rufus and I think they're now fitted to his spaceframe .

Hi Phil,
Just measured the original De Carbon at 280mm centers w/out any spring preload. Looking at my records the WP I got from you is 295mm.
That De Carbon was pretty crap and didn't last much more than a few thousand km. The WP solved the wallow I was getting in high speed sweepers so money well spent. Fast forward 22 years and over 90,000 kays it's well passed it's useby date even though it's had 2 rebuilds. Would love to replace it. Got a lead on a Ohlins that should work from another MK3 owner. Just need to find the $$ for it. Need to get a real job again I suppose!! :'(
