Recommend electronic ignition for 750

I would stick with points ( points didn’t cause your piston to hole) because you already have them, just plonk a new set on ( VW points with pin removed ) set them up with a strobe and your away. I have original 1969 points, new coils ( VW) and new condensers - starts instantly, runs fine- ideal. Holed piston could well be weak mixture ..
Just out of interest which model Vw points and condensers am I able to use. I’m going back to that set up.
Thanks Steve

The points and electronic ignition debate for 750s has been done to death.
I do about 10 000 km yearly on my two running 750s. Ignition and points setting is done once a year. Hardly high maintenance.
When touring, I take a spare ignition plate, complete with points and condensers. Just needs setting up by the side of the road if need be.
I rather that than ride around with a spare electronic ignition box.
The only ignition related problem I've had in 35 years of riding 750s was in the first year, when riding to the UK, a misfire was quickly traced to the condenser rivets being loose and making a bad earth. My condensers are bolted to the backplate since then and I've never had an ignition related problem.

I fitted Sachse sytem a few years ago, works flawless and you have a few suitable pre-set ignition curves to choose from. My first 750 was fitted with a Norton Boyer Bransden ignition, this worked fine also. Biggest issue on the original system I had with the advance unit, after 50+ years it didn't function properly anymore, even after cleaning and greasing.

Intermotor 22700V.
Fits some VW Golf and Lombardini agricultural equipment.

Found that Intermotor 22700V cross-referenced to a Volvo part number so I ordered 2 sets from the Volvo parts shop. Received Bosch 1 237 013 081.

As noted here previously you must separate the fixed and moving parts to allow removal of the post from the backplate, did that in the mini lathe, then open out the resulting hole from 4.66mm to 8mm, did that on tower drill with 5/16 inch bit and needle file to get a snug fit on the backplate post and also had to relieve the slot for the screw used to lock in place after setting the gap since it's a little too close to the post hole.

Modern electronic ignition very rarely give problems. Its fitted to every new vehicle on the road today and how often do you hear of a vehicle breaking down because of it. Points on the other hand wear out. The springs loose tension and they require fiddling at least once a year. I fitted electronic ignition to my SF3 nine years ago and have never had the points cover off since then. And yes, I'm a lazy sod.

Just look at the posts concerning ignition problems on 750s.
They nearly all concern electronic ignitions.

Really? Once I got my Ignitech set up I have total confidence that it will give me trouble free motoring. And the custom setup I had for decades using a Suzuki ND system rigged to the Bosch advance unit was also 100% reliable. I've also fitted that system to other SFs. Do I miss the points?

Adding an EI to my Bonnie and later to my GQ short wheelbase 4-wheel drive. Does anyone remember mucking with points hidden under Dirtbike Flywheels? Did my head in with that craziness. Set and forget wins the day, especially with old kickstart bikes.

The fault though is rarely the ignition system itself, mostly incorrect wiring or assembly... user faults.

I've had to rectify many DIY installations of the Witt DMC because the owners/installers were too lazy to read the manual or simply thought they knew better, which is more often the case than one would assume! Bike electrics follow simple rules, ignore them and reliability issues are sure to follow.

Undeniable facts are that electronic systems offer maintenance-free operation and very often, enhanced engine performance.

There really is a reason why even the most humble lawn mower engines use electronic, breaker points-less systems these days.

Alan Milyards six pot two stroke Kawasaki has six sets of points!!!!! dont know about Simon Whitlocks seven potter or even his 48 potter, but suspect the later has 48 bleeding sets of points as its basically got 48 Kwak 250/3 derived engines installed plus a "donkey" 50cc scooter engine to get it started, that will have an electronic setup (for Christs sake) and an electric starter, to get it (the 50cc) going first.
give me a single cylinder Lister/Petter any day. You will finds the same amount of wiring and electronics as in a pickax

On point. Although six sets of points may require an extra !
As Dellortoman said: Points vs electronic ignition. It's an argument that won't go away, even though there's a clear winner. Share the points, kick for goals and maybe we all win; but soldier on me hearties! I am an electronic convert skipping to my Lou without missing a beat!
Great discussion, I keep learning from this forum thanks to all.

And aeroplanes use points and a trigger mag….still last thing you want is your mower conking out when your at 30,000 feet😂
