Redax 320 watt charging/ignition system install

I bet lots say that, its to much trouble if there going well to strip them back to a bear frame. I just wish I had done that 30 years ago when I first got mine.
 
If you have the engine out, the rest is roughly 1,5 - 2 hours to strip. Re-assembling my 1000 SFC was done in less than a day, including the engine (which was just 20 minutes with the bare frame, 2 people and the engine laying on the side on some foam).

What takes time is the cleaning and re-painting/coating everything. Oh - and the engine... 6 years in my case... :oops:
 
I'd mentioned it somewhere but I found out when mounting the Redax kit on my 3C that the right hand engine cover on the early 3Cs is 2mm deeper than on the later ones meaning that the back of Reds ignition plate rubs against the starter freewheel nut.
The men in the know, well, they knew which is why Red has made a thicker base plate to keep that from happening. Exactly 2mm in it.
Many thanks to Red for having come to my rescue. Keith Nairn did as well, only his parcel never arrived but luckily was returned to him.
Original plate on the right, new thicker one on the left.

Will the the extra juice from Red's charging system upgrade inspire someone to fit modern FI to an ancient triple?
Or, has it already been done?

FI is old hat... ;) Moto Witt had several examples running in the mid 1990's. Not so easy back then, we needed to custom-build almost every component, no readily available stuff on the market yet. HP gain was considerable, the company triple hack that only just managed to push out 90 ponies on carbs leapt to around 112.

The necessary precision required for parts manufacturing prevented further development, we just didn't have the facilities to maintain the required close tolerances. Throttle bodies and their components eg. were individually machined manually. CNC machining would have been the answer, but out of the (financial) question at the time.

Hat off to Gijs and his team for finally bringing this effort to fruitition! As soon as travel is allowed again I'll be off to Driebergen for a test ride.

Was it obvious when fitting or only when running, I did notice the plate didnt sit completely flush and was drawn in when I tightened the mounting screws

When I mounted the plate, I found the pick up plate very close to the nut but didn't worry since the kit was very well made so I imagined it to be taken into account. Retrospectively, I did need to add a second washer under the backing plate screws to get them tightened down. Obviously, the pick up plate was against the nut.
I turned the engine over by hand all the time I was timing it and turned it over on the starter as well.
When I started the bike, it wasn't the easy victory I was expecting, rough running and popping .
I stopped it rapidly and saw dust in the engine cover which it turns out came from the ignition plate. The lumpy running was due to the whole thing having been pushed forwards by the nut and so probably 15° retarded.

I mounted the new set up today. It's close, only 2mm clearance. Not easy to see when it's all in place.

Thanks Paul, the plate was clearly thinner than the original. Rather than add extra washers I shortened the screws by 2mm. It stated firsts try, runs perfectly and no unusually noise. Ill pull it off again just to double check its not interfering.

I probably had about 1mm scrubbed off the back of the pick up plate. Makes a lot of plastic dust that's hard to miss.

if the back of the board was interfering with the seal nut the system would have shut down by now
our new version of the Hall Effect trigger boards have a different set up where the tracks on the printed circuit board are better protected
