I always thought dukes ran backwards because the gearbox is driven by direct gear, instead of primary chain--ie it runs in opposite direction to crank.

Gearboxes can be set up in different ways, taking the final drive off the mainshaft (like Laverda) in which case the mainshaft must rotate forwards, or the layshaft (like a lot of jap bikes) in which case the mainshaft must rotate backwards, or even with an intermediate shaft between engine and gearbox (like Kawa Z1300) which could go either way. Ducati bevel twins have the final drive sprocket on the mainshaft like Laverda, so you're correct - with a geared primary and drive sprocket on the mainshaft, the engine needs to rotate backwards.

I'll probably get banned from the forum for saying this, but I think Ducati's geared primary is a much better system than Laverda's chain primary.

Cheers,
Cam

I doubt it, as Laverda probably also thought so, since they used geared primary for the 8-valve twins...

Which way do they rotate?

The fact that the bevel motor has no chains at all makes it easy to work on,,

except the ignition---apparently.

What it lacks in chains it more than compensates for with shims..  :D

Shims-removing the slack out of old girls since 1948.

Ducatis are the only bikes I've come across with an engine that rotates backwards. It's something that messes with my mind when doing ignition or valve timing.

The new MV F3 makes a point of running backwards doesn't it? I think they claim it improves the handling - or certainly changes it...

ha, the bsa bantam ran backwards or forwards - how's that for hi-tech?? the main problem was knowing which way it was running as you kicked it into gear!

I rebuilt a Messerschmitt bubble car engine which was fitted with a Siba Dynastart device with two switchable sets of points, start the engine forwards for forward motion or backwards for reverse. Cool thing to drive.

Have you seen what those things go for Keith? The last two I saw were priced at over ?20000.

Nice things, they were very well made, as you would expect from an aircraft manufacturer I suppose. 20k seems a bit steep but then again people are paying twelve grand for worn out shiney Jotas. Funny old lot.

Don't suppose you have their names and addres?

Dick the crank runs anti clockwise which of course drives the geared clutch clockwise, which turns the countershaft anti clockwise which turns the back wheel. 'course it all depends which side of the machine you're viewing this from....

Those with digital clocks found that their Monty ran backwards as soon as the clock struck midnight on 31st December 1999.

Don't know if the boy scouts do but I have, and they both wear analog watches as it was MY decision. Now I've got 2 kids that can read the time and they have both commented to me that half their friends can't tell the time from an analog clock. Bloody disgusting.....

That's another thread gone west.... :D

Mind you, my boys know how to operate the remote fo the TV, which is more than I can do.... and they can change the ring tone on my phone, a process which I've never been able to fathom.

But I bet you know how to use a slide rule :D
