Yep, I would like to see piccies of that as well.
As an aside, my series 2 has five wires coming from the Alternator, where as on all the wiring diagrams I see, they only have 3, the thing is in total bits, so until I start piecing it back together, (or I have a play with the wiring harness etc in the meantime) I will be wondering if only 3 are used, do the 5 link into 3 in the harness somewhere? I will let you know my findings when I have them, unless anyone out there knows the definitive answer.

Yeah, I thought that, the diagrams I have show one of the three wires performing that function, so I figure using separate extra coils from the Alternator would be the way to go.

Well of course I needed to ask.
As I always impressed on the Engineers I managed before I retired, there is nothing wrong with asking a question, you may get various replies, some helpful, some glib, some plain daft, but in amongst that information, there may be something that just confirms your thinking, or even gives you new insight into the area of your question. As I hadn't really considered the implications of replacing the handlebar switches until you mentioned that about the feed to them, then it was certainly worth me asking, thank you very much for giving me an, "Ah!" moment, it is much appreciated.
As an old Boss of mine would say, "Next!".

Some slightly misleading info there, Clem. If you poked the alternator output straight on to the headlight then the lamp wouldn't last long at higher revs!
The extra alternator wires will be found to double up on to the 3 phase output. No idea what the original intent was, but the spare 2 are left unconnected, handily insulated by the bullet plastic covers.
As standard, the factory routed one of the three phases through the headlight switch to save overstressing the original reg/rect. This gives all sorts of grief, so you're better off (assuming the reg/rect has been replaced) connecting direct to the reg/rect and leaving the loop to the lighting switch unused.
