SF for sale, USA

Looks interesting and at least they clarify that it's not running- I thought the 1975 SF had the mag wheels/rear disc/seat tail. I tried contacting them but it doesn't seem my submission went thru

That's the 76 model year, SF3, which could be made in 75, and the frame could be stamped SF2.

The dealer sent me larger photos and I asked a few questions about it and I made a counter offer. It could be a good deal, providing that the motor is sound and tank isn't rusted completely out. After restoring my SF2, I know the high cost of now scarce parts availability and engine rebuilding. I received an email from Dam Classic Racing about the tariffs impact and sounds like Wolfgang may be retiring at some point. Part of me wants to rescue this bike-

spoked wheels Paul... no ducktail seat?? SF3??

Just answering Teddy's comment: "Looks interesting and at least they clarify that it's not running- I thought the 1975 SF had the mag wheels/rear disc/seat tail. I tried contacting them but it doesn't seem my submission went thru"

It's now advertised as a 74 SF which makes more sense. The (repainted) gas tank has a fair amount of interior rust that's to be expected. It's at a BMW dealer that doesn't sound familiar w Laverdas, and of course, the front fender is backwards. It also has a Supertrapp muffler!

I doubt that BMW dealers are familiar with anything.

No, they don't know Laverda! The lowest they'll go is $4500, and since it's not running and could be a can of worms, I'm passing on it. I would buy it solely for parts backup.
But seriously, how can a shop expect to get a decent price if it's not running- why not take a little time and effort- it's not a complicated machine.

For a modern laptop diagnosis mechanic it is a very complicated machine. It is unmolested, little used, pretty much all there. I would be very surprised if it was rooted on the inside. USA seems to be the bastion of twins like this, and typical that it is just given some shiny paint. I have got far worse machines than this running for people after just a little fettling.

I made a counter offer and might pull the trigger on this and waiting on a few more pics to show if it's intact or not. The motor may or may not be in good shape, so it'll be a gamble of sorts- so what say you folks? After recommissioning my 74 750, I'm familiar w the costs involved (like exhausts, etc). If nothing else, it'll be a good parts bike-

You've got the know-how and experience to do the recon work, Teddy. Go for it. I wouldn't hesitate, as i've had so much experience with every single part that makes up an SF that nothing really scares me.

Thanks Pirhana- I want to rescue it. My main concern is getting engine parts (if needed) since the Orange Tariffs are affecting parts availability here. I,ll keep posting if I buy it-

Stick to your counter offer, I think you'll get it.

Sight unseen, and the engine condition unknown, and it's on the other side of the USA. If you get it for a song, it could be your lucky day, or not. In the photos, it looks to be complete and close to original, except for the exhaust. Maybe a diamond in the rough, it's not even rough, just not running.
The sales write-up from the selling shop, Bob's, is encouraging and states that it was stored in a controlled environment. If it is good, any reasonable mechanic and a BMW shop should have someone who knows carbs and points to get it running, or offer no more than $3k, you still gotta get it home. Good luck.

Check bores (with a scope) for rust or bad scoring, check compression, strip, clean and set carbs, check for spark, set points and timing, drain and refill with new oil, clean tank and any filters, add fresh fuel, new battery, hit the starter!! I

f it makes awful noises, try and find the source, pull the donk if nec and dismantle. There are probably less things that can lead to a massive repair bill on a twin than a triple (eg, bent and cracked heads, soft valve seats, dodgy warranty middle mains).

All well and good, Q, but TeddyG is in Portland, Oregon, and the bike is in Baltimore, Maryland, 4500 km. That's like Perth to Melbourne ++ and:eek:there is a shit load of snow and mountains between Teddy and the bike. As it sits, my offer would be tops $3k. There will be estate sales on the left coast, too, 'patience grasshopper.'
