Actually I think it's called 'active' and 'passive' safety. Sorry for continuing the hijack!In road safety jargon, brakes, like tyres and suspension, are classed as primary safety items (ie their function is to prevent accidents) and air bags, like seat belts and crumple zones, are secondary safety items (ie designed to minimise injury when an accident does occur).
