SF1 Regulator Issues

What is it with all these Regulator issues lately, I had overcharging issues a while back and probably did for ages without knowing it, and a few others as well. I had a very unpleasant ride home for 150ks on a dark night with a blown headlight was a symptom of exactly that issue discovered by accident probably a year later. My repeated suggestion about a dash-mounted Volt metre might show up a few more regulator issues still hidden out there.
M-unit gives a voltage readout to my phone - so there is at least something positive to be said for them.

I think we are talking about two different components Piet……?? I’m refering to a sacshe regulator, not an M Unit 🧐
Yes Dave, apparently.

@ Chris, you wrote the generator worked fine before the strip down. Was the generator in bits for a lengthy period, ie, the armature removed from the field windings? If so, it may have lost its magnetism. It's only a tiny amount, but it is necessary to get the electrons flowing. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly how to restore it. Actually, it just requires a jolt with a 12V battery for a second, but I don't remember which way round. John surely could give you some pointers.

It seems these gennys can hold their magnetism for decades if just chucked in an apple box and left in a barn, but can lose their entire magnetism over a fairly short time if left laying in bits.

Right you are Piet, called "Flashing" and correct again, done with a short DC current pulse to field winding. Plenty of how to's on the WWW. Bit of an old bloke Peit, to spot that one, age does have its compensations. Grin here

May or may not be a remedy for this issue at hand, if it is the issue, then would pose an insurmountable problem without knowledge, in remedy. j

Generator not disassembled - just externally cleaned. I am going to refit the old bosh reg for the moment and see if that goes OK.

I ran through generator test (DF -> Earth and test voltage between D+ and earth with the bike running) and it was producing output so I think the generator is OK.

Noted you witnessed an output Voltage. Without a belt connected you can make a generator behave as a motor, that confirms the magnetics are working, no voltage regulator required for that test.

Pending the gen/motor test result, another easy thing to do, flash the armature, remove one possible unknown. HTH j

Good idea to test with the original regulator.
If exhausting all avenues you could also try the polarising, though apparently rarely a problem it could be worth eliminating from the equation.
