stalled project getting moving again

Hi Tom, hi all

Tom, I borrowed your idea and gave the existing original seat a good cleaning and polish. No perfect, but quite presentable. Given my originality theme with this rebuild, I think I will leave it on the bike for the time being, great idea, thanks!

as for everyone else, I am calling my end of April deadline mostly met, not completely, but mostly. Amazing what a deadline will do for motivation, I got an awful lot done in the past few weeks, after having left the bike untouched gathering dust for a year.

I rode the bike up and down my street earlier to day, minus the Jota fairing and most of the rest of the bodywork other than the tank. The Halcyon stainless steel bar ends have arrived, the LED bulbs have arrived, I have to figure out what I am going to use for a grab bar (I have an original but rusty stock grab bar, and I have an unpainted/chromed grab bar rack from the UK that I am going to test fit to see how it fits and looks), I have to fabricate new rear mounting brackets for the Jota fairing to work with the 1200 tanks, and I have some general  fettling left to do, but I am very happy the bike is running and substantially complete 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

back from holiday's, back at the bike.

there is no apparent way I can see to use anything like the stock rear Jota fairing brackets or anything even similar, just not enough room under the 1200 tank. I am looking at how else I can stabilize the back of the fairing legs, will go buy some metal tomorrow. I am looking at possible alternative mounting points as well.

started on the TS Mirage striping, have done the left side side panel and the left side tail piece so far, a couple of photos. Looks OK to me, I am just eyeballing it with pin stripe tape.

Psst, Paul, the stripes on the side cover should be more horizontal, not vertical as per the picture.

bloody hell, click on the photo and open it up, it will go right side up....... tough enough for a guy blind in one eye to get the stripes relatively straight and even, never mind this vertical vs horizontal stuff..... :o ;)

:D It's Ok, I've worked a way around the picture rotation. You've done great work, considering your ailment.

Now I just have to explain to my comrades why I was laying on my office desk.  ::)
 One of the buggers just suggested I turn the screen ........

There is no need I can assure you:
Just 'Ctrl' 'Alt' '→' (Right Arrow) at the same time and consider your screen turned!!!!!!!
Great trick to play on your workmates if they leave their computer unattended for a moment.

now to my nagging and persistent issue, mounting the Jota Series 2 fairing on the 1200 TS Mirage.

I had everything beautifully straightened and sorted, and the fairing mounted, when I went to put the 1200 tank on and found there is absolutely no way the 1200 tank will fit over the Jota round tank rear fairing brackets that mount under the 1200 tank near the coils and are supposed to come out from under the tank. I don't have a 1000 tank here at the moment to compare to, but I am guessing the 1200 tank is deeper or something, as the Jota rear brackets hold the 1200 tank about 2 inches higher than it should be, it won't let it be moved into the required position.

I bent and twisted the rear Jota brackets, bent them down further, etc., there is just no way they are going to work with the 1200 tank, and there is very very limited space between the bottom of the 1200 tank and the top of the engines valve cover, the bloody things almost touch. Today I went and bought 4 feet of flat mild steel to make new brackets from, and also bought 4 feet in the same size of stainless steel flat bar to hopefully polish up and use for the final product if I get something figured out.

to make a frustrating story short, after considering welding the mild steel to my freshly painted frame just in front of the tank, even that doesn't look like it would work, then I considered using the oil cooler mounting as a base for convoluted brackets that would have to reach way back twisting and turning, now I am looking at the 7 mm threaded head stud on the engine as a place to base a fairing bracket from......

I know I am not anywhere near the first person to stick a Jota Series 2 fairing on a 1200. Has anyone else here done this, and how did you solve the rear fairing bracket issue?

Using the 7 mm threaded head stud as a base for a rear fairing bracket is far from ideal, I am imagining the entire Jota fairing shell and windscreen buzzing like a bee in concert with the solid mounted Series 2 180 engine, but I am really stumped. Ideas, anyone? A couple of photos.

I needed to walk away for a bit, tomorrow I will take the 1200 tank back off and fiddle with attempting to make some cardboard templates for making new deeper brackets mounting to the same place under the tank that the rear Jota brackets mount to.

I did a little more pin striping to day as well, really tough to get the double pinstripe tape to make some of those required curves, I have a few small bubbles/kinks in the tape that don't show in photos, I suspect if I decide I like the striping I will eventually have to find a pinstriper to paint them on properly, or someone more adept at working with pin stripe tape than I am, there must be tricks of the trade I don't know (yet).....  ;)

Paul,

I've had the fairing on my 3C fixed to the 7mm head studs for decades without issues.  The engine buzzes no more than the rest of the bike, perhaps a bit less because it is such a solid lump.

I'll post a pic or 2 tonight, off to work just now...

I made a bracket bolted  off the lock stop mount, it passes completely across the frame under the tank from one side to the other and turns up and back to mount the Bevel ss fairing on my 3C. It was originally made to mount the TT Montegi full fairing I once had fitted.

Piet and Vince, thanks for the replies!

Vince, I hadn't thought of the lock stop mount, I'll have a look.

The very simplest, shortest, and most direct, would be mounting off the 7 mm engine head stud, Piet thanks for confirming that can work.

Here's how I done it, Paul.

'V' bracket with rubber mount at each end, fairing bolted to the mounts with M6x10 countersunk screws, 'V' fixed to engine stud.  May find time tomorrow to remove the fairing for a better view of mount.

Please be aware that the head is slightly off-centre to tank and any bodywork!

Mount fairing

I did a lot of tweaking the under tank mounts lower enough to run under the tank then up without touching the bottom edge and keep the bottom fairing corners hitting the cam cover.

Hi Piet

bloody hell, no I was not aware the head was slightly off center to tank and bodywork, I went ahead and made two mirror image mounting brackets that took me most of this evening to make, and are hanging to dry from their first coat of paint...... :-[ :-[ :-[ Will now have to see what bracket modifications are going to be required to get the fairing legs even.

my spouse was laughing at me when she peeked out into the garage. Making the brackets involved a vise, angle grinder, bench grinder, drill press, MIG welder, and the bead blasting cabinet. Also, when I fired up the MIG welder, which had not been used for awhile, and stuck on my "instant on" welding helmet, I got a fairly substantial eyeful of welding flash, the bloody solar powered darkening mechanism was out of power...... how much dammed sun do you get inside a garage anyways?....stupid design, now the helmet is outside on the patio deck waiting for the sun tomorrow... I just went ahead and welded everything up with my eyes closed, didn't seem to make much difference to my welding quality  ;) ;) ;) :D :D

Hi Jugs_S

thanks for the photos. I am sure the rear brackets fit well with the roundish Jota tank, but there is no bloody way they will work with my 1200 tank, the 1200 tank seems deeper/taller than the brackets intended for the Jota tnak will allow for, even after I bent the heck out of them trying to make it work.

I know what you mean, you might notice the slightly hammered look of the under tank brackets. It was a good exercise in post pix to Gallery and linking so no worries.

Hi Jugs

and the bar stock Laverda used for those brackets is very substantial, it took a largish hammer to make any headway in altering them, but in my case I am dealing not only with the 1200 tank, but the forward engine covers of the 82 1200 TS Mirage which doesn't leave any clearance between the tank and the engine covers either. In the photos looks like you got your mounting just about perfect for your application.

Can't you run a bracket off the mounts for the side fairings?

Hi Grant

as I am having to re make one the brackets I made yesterday, now that Piet has pointed out that the 7 mm engine stud is not equal in its spacing to the bodywork from side to side, I am re considering.

I did look at the mount for the engine panel as a possible mounting point, I will have another look later to day when I get back to the house/garage.

as an aside, I set the solar powered welding helmet out on the deck last night to recharge today in the sun, got up to a wet drizzling dreary day and a welding helmet full of water.......
