The starter clutch on my 1971 750 SF has started making noise, so after reading most of the threads on the forum it seems strip and replace the rollers and springs is the recommended fix , can someone tell me how many I have to order as I am waiting for a friends three legged puller to turn up, so thought I would get ahead of the curve for a change. Thanks

Better way,
dismantle the starter-clutch
and watch, what you're really need.

Post Pictures, if you like, before you
take the Order.

I know different bike. but there was a new rattle/noise coming from the right side of the motor.

Turns out it was loose nuts, all I did was strip it down clean, retighten every thing, and all is good.
I did rebuild it a long time ago and nothing needed replacing on inspection this time.

As above inspect first, cheers Ian.

I posted mine of to octeam to rebuild my spray clutch as the cover was looking indifferent too, I didn't fancy tackling the rivets, they did a good job.

The rollers are nothing special. Available from any decent bearing shop. Just measure them up (Ø10 x 10L from memory) cheap enough - so I replace regardless of apparent condition.

Further to my original post, stripped the starter clutch of the bike, low and behold there are only five springs rollers etc...first bodged bit I have found on the bike.

Much further on from my original post - turns out that the sixth roller & spring is stuck in one of the holes. Anyone had the same issue and found a working solution. Thanks

I'm guessing you mean 'plunger' not roller. Not uncommon for a plunger to get stuck. I made a jig that enabled me to align and drill a hole from the outside into the plunger hole with the clutch mounted on the saddle of my lathe. Before drilling I created a flat using an end mill. I could then use a fine drift and free the plunger. They usually seize because the spring gets mangled and manages to foul the plungers.starter-clutch-drill#1.JPG

Haven't tried it yet. But I think, a small neodym magnet could work.
E.g. a small stick-shaped one (15x4x4) has 2kg attractive power.
Only prob is that they might stick very nicely to the clutch body itself and fail to prod the pesky plunger.
Merveilleux le tour EMCO Compact 8.:)
C'est vrai! Je 'aime bc - une machine splendide. Je ne suis pas un torneur qualifie ou forme mais j'ai produit des choses assez complexes avec ca.
