Starter motor

I own a RGS 1000 1984.
The starter spins okay but doesn’t seem to catch on to the motor.
It just lets out whering noise.
I checked the teeth on the gears behind generator and no teeth are missing.
Also gears have tension in one direction but not the other.
Can any one help please?

Remove starter motor, takes less than 10 minutes, and check that the Bendix is free and operating correctly. Clean and lube it while it's out.
If that's functioning well, then it's, almost certainly, the starter freewheel. Strip, check, replace springs and any defective plungers/rollers.

Starter clutch needs a service, involves replacing 6 springs, plungers and rollers. Just did mine last week.
The springs will be fucked, not necessarily the plungers and rollers but worth changing anyway as they cost bugger all.
Don't put it off as it can damage the ring gear it grabs to turn the motor over.

many 120's do not have a bendix on the starter motor, that died with Bosch starters, originally black, the SJCE starters, originally silver, never did have the bendix.

starter sprag clutch it is, I keep spares if you need them and are local, looked at your profile and didnt discover the answer to that, I am between Orpington and Sevenaoks in Kent, take mine and replace with new later.

Thanks Clem but I am in Albury Australia.
Can get parts I have the silver one. So could not find bendix

Most Laverda starter problems are the battery. If the starter clutch does not get up to speed fast enough because of a weak battery the clutch will slip. From then on each attempt to start the bike will destroy the clutch even more.

Try a new battery first before taking the clutch apart.

From personal experience, most Laverda starter problems are dirty starter collectors. That would be followed by bad earths.
I only very occasionally use a charger because I forget, my Laverdas, SFC included start on the button be it three times a year.

I think he means the armature commutator Quentin.

Called a "Kollektor" in german, good chance the french translation is similar.

I've only seen smoke exit from the burnt-out insulating block of the 12V terminal Chris! :ROFLMAO: It's such a shame that the freely-available Lucas replacement smoke is not compatible with Bosch systems... would make life so much easier.
