I own a RGS 1000 1984.
The starter spins okay but doesn’t seem to catch on to the motor.
It just lets out whering noise.
I checked the teeth on the gears behind generator and no teeth are missing.
Also gears have tension in one direction but not the other.
Can any one help please?

I think he means the armature commutator Quentin.

Called a "Kollektor" in german, good chance the french translation is similar.

I've only seen smoke exit from the burnt-out insulating block of the 12V terminal Chris! :ROFLMAO: It's such a shame that the freely-available Lucas replacement smoke is not compatible with Bosch systems... would make life so much easier.

Yes, collecteur or Kollector.
Armature is a thing for knights, dragons and damsels in distress.

Sprag clutch not grabbing properly, extremely common on the MkII and 120s.

The clutch may be grabbing enough to give you a bit of tension when attempting to turn the gears by hand, but when 1/2hp acts on them, the clutch can very easily slip.

At best, the springs are shot. At worst, the entire unit is fucked. In that case, it would have emitted horrible crunching/screeching noises before expiring completely. Springs, plungers and rollers are readily available, inner rampy thingy, I'd have to check.

Albury, Oz or UK? Not much help stating town if there are 2, 20000km apart.

My starter clutch started slipping badly yesterday. S1 motor. changed out the springs, rollers and plungers not that long ago.
When I get home I'll strip it to see whats going on. Maybe after market springs ain't what they use to be.

I had some aftermarket plungers crack and break Rob. I went back to well used originals from my used spares box and no probs. I'm also convinced there is quite a bit of difference between aftermarket springs as well.

My 1200ts mirage was retrofitted with a Ducati starter that didn't have a Bendix . The starter clutch failed at 8k RPM and exploded the starter. I need the whole assembly if I can find one. I have a jota cylinder head for trades . Valves and springs included 1000000776.jpg
