Hi Marty, winter is dry season so as Tippie said August to October probably best, September would be good target. (Places like Atherton Tableland can be a lot cooler so a bit later generally better weather - I got caught on this trip
.)
Like I said to Quentin a lot of the roads I talk about are a bit off the beaten track so depends on what interests you.
For example the "Great Inland Road" is basically a 3000 km route from Sydney to Cooktown and takes you on a line between the road you did on the round Aussie trip and the Bruce highway which is most definitely an avoid. Some sections of this road can be quite boring but there is plenty to see and best to plan to take some detours which would be well worthwhile. Personally the more remote the better so I will generally head to the small towns and out of the way pubs, but some of that may involve dirt of varying degrees (but these idiots keep paving many of these roads
!) A bit of planning and you can certainly have an interesting trip including heading to some spectacular (even touristy) sites.
Of course it all depends on what interests you and time you have, plenty options, you'll never want to leave
Edit - forgot to say, if you head this way count me in for the leg further north and happy to help with suggestions and places to visit.....
