The carburettors on the V6

I'm sure someone will know. I have a need for a pair of single choke downdraft carbs around 30mm choke size.

I note that this is what's used on the V6. Does anyone know what make and model they are please.

I suspect they are probably Weber or Dellorto from a small car - Fiat 126 ?

Thanks

Greg

I think that's also the carb used on Atlas model Laverdas, bigger than 30mm though

Well. the V6 brochure lists them as 30mm. Bear in mind that a lot of car carbs are smaller at the venturi than entry or exit.

Atlas carb isn't downdraught. It's also a twin choke.
Other than that...

The first V6 engine had 30mm Dell?Orto FRD carbs, the second 34mm.

I recall Cor mentioning that they were used on a Ford, never heard him mention Fiat 126, but who knows.

Th V6 book tells us that Weber 30 IVF were initially considered, though Dell'Orto were chosen - modified versions of an Ala Romeo installation.  30mm, then 34mm as Marnix mentioned. The 34mm were FRDB type. Dell'Orto made 2 technicians available for the development work.

I spoke with Cor Dees during his build of the first "replica" V6, seem to remember they were Dellortos, 6 single throat items.  He reported he had difficulties finding them, finally found that they were used on a certain european Ford model.  Major difference to the Laverda version was the integrated automatic choke device, which he deleted.  He was busy making the linkages and showed me a box full, saying "I've got the world market for V6 carb linkages in the bag!" :D

Mk1 Escort, 1000 and 1100cc versions. And Fiat 850.

I suspect I'm too late to the party here in NZ. The few 1100's imported if surviving would have had the ubiquitous 1600 transplant long ago.
Pretty sure we didn't get the 1000.
But I'll ask amongst the classic car guys anyway.

Thanks for the pointers.

Hey Greg ....... just curious. Will Laverdas make it onto the list of "sentient beings"?

I had to go looking to find out what you were driving at. It didn't make news here.

The answer of course is - you'd have to ask a Laverda that yourself.

I have however known a couple of evil bastard Hondas...And I'm sure you've had occasion to talk to your chopper too.

"Mk1 Escort, 1000 and 1100cc versions"

are you sure GregT?, in the UK the bog a stock escorts had a Ford made carb (FoMoco) similar to a Solex and the GT models had a license built (by Ford) Webber that was a twin choke, the secondary one being opened only if the pedal was rapidly floored.

No, like you I thought they used the Ford carb. But Mr Google says it's so.  Maybe continental market only ?  Cologne assembly vs Dagenham ?

Pretty academic anyway. My chances of finding a pair of those carbs in wrecking yards here in NZ are vanishingly slim.

Is this the type of thing?

Think they were used on the '71-'81 TC (Taunus/Cortina) models.  Likely the smaller OHC engines, 1.3 and 1.6l.  The automatic choke thingy was infamous for its frequent failures.

Yes, thank you. I hadn't looked on ebay as i very seldom buy there. Prices are reasonable - but condition is the gamble as always.
Long way to send it back.....

I remember talking to Cor about these carbs on my last visit to him in 2018, and I have this photo of a new one he was working on at the time. If you look at a closeup of the Lav V6 you'll see the pump housing in the foreground is blocked off, I assume this is the auto-choke.

my parents bought a Valiant AP6 station wagon in 1966, one of it's features was an automatic choke. My dad seemed to think that was a big deal. I think it was operated by some sort of bi-metallic spring which rotated the choke butterfly as it warmed up. To be honest I don't remember for certain.

The plunger on the carby in the photo may be part of an accelerator pump mechanism.

Cheers

I think you are right on both counts Bazee,
I had two Cortina estates's brand new, both 2 litre pinto petrol models, they both had the auto choke you describe, and both failed and were replaced under warranty, several times, the idea was to reduce pollution by not having it operating at a rich mixture for too long, or being left on by dummy drivers, at one year and about three days, both were replaced with a manual conversion, and gave no further trouble, the first doing 80,000 miles in less than two years and the second, did the same, but was then retained as a family car until it rotted away was crashed in the side by a careless prat coming out of a side road, at about 150,000 miles ten years later. My late wife really loved that car, and she cried when she saw it being craned onto a flat bed for scrap.

And yes you are right the lever in the foreground is an accelerator pump, interesting that this was disabled on the V6(s) of Cor Dees, and also on the Laverda family V6 ?? maybe I don't know.
