thinking of adding a "Non Laverda Projects" forum section. Opinions?

Hi all

many members, including myself, have non Laverda projects and various other non Laverda interests. For example I have been quite enjoying the currently running Bimota thread, as only one of many examples, and I have been hiding my own current Moto Giro 1957 Gilera Sport rebuild and related questions in the "Wanted Forum" under the heading of Moto Giro bike. Although it is a non Laverda project a number of members have come forward with really useful information.

I know many of our members are doing other really interesting things in addition to their Laverda interests, some of which I occassionally see on social media.

I have been discussing with the other admins adding a new Forum section for Non Laverda projects and stuff. That way someone only interested in Laverda can just ignore the proposed entire Non Laverda Forum section, those who are interested in what other projects and things Laverda Forum members are doing outside of the Laverda area could view as they want.

Thoughts, opinions, comments?

Knee jerk reaction:
While I'm open to other interests, we already have a fair representation: Coffee machines; Barbecue; Australian soccer; to name but a few. They are wider pursuits shared by a group of people primarily interested in Laverdas.
If too many wider issues are included I have some concern that it might dilute the spirit of this great forum until it becomes more like a McDonalds than a charcoal barbecued chili burger.

Kind of agree with Mr Sock. The conversations often extend beyond Laverdas and we can choose to read or not read. I think your Gilera thread and the Bi-mota one are interesting in an Italian way - so kinda relevant.
 
Facefart is always good for those who want to learn about envelope making.....
As Mr Sock said, already have a cooking channel etc etc...
I think enough interesting non Laverda stuff gets on here anyway without trying to get more.

Just my 2 cents.
 
I'd prefer to see the non laverda content in a separate forum section rather than having it posted in the general section etc.
Some of it is very interesting, some not so much for me. At least it would all be in one separate place and not get in the way of those who have no desire to go there.

Paul-You offered great points that justify your suggestion. Excellent idea & another reason to visit the forum!
 
No, I want only exactly what I want and it must follow THE GUIDELINES. I say bing back STRONG mediation and extended holidays for all transgressors who don't comply. If I don't get exactly what I want I am leaving IMMEDIATELY and that will be all your extreme loss. Better not say that too loud or it might get crowd support. Na, another listing would be a great idea. More reading for me is good. BTW laughing is also good, toaster racing makes me laugh a lot. The Bimota and Julians race bike and Pauls build and Chrises Toaster racing thread have been excellent, both informative and funny and we need more of it. BTW where has Ron gone?
 
I can see both sides of this issue. The reason I raised it, and the reason both Yogi and Ron are gone, are from complaints from quite a few long time members that things were deteriorating here in this forum to the point where a number of people had then voted with their feet and keyboards and up and left. A lot of the complaints on the way out the door were about perceived abusive responses, way off topic and sometimes bloody weird replies, etc.. There has been a lot of admin agonizing behind the scenes over the last couple of months about trying to strike a balance while preserving the value of a Laverda specific forum, and preserving the forum itself from blow ups and melt downs that have destroyed other forums, including a couple of prior Laverda forums.

We have so many cultures, so many personalities, and so many diverse perceptions, that trying to strike the "right" balance has been a tight rope walk for more than 20 years now. We don't always get it right, but we are still here, so far.......

Often some of my favourite reading here on the Laverda Forum is some of the stuff that gets farther and farther off the original topic, and I have inadvertantly learned all kinds of very interesting cultural things over the years. Again I am trying to strike a balance that a topic like my 1957 Gilera 150 Sport rebuild, clearly not Laverda related, might not be of any interest to some. So, do I not post about the Gilera? Thtat is certainly one way to deal with it. Or, putting those kinds of Non Laverda topics and threads in an area clearly denoted as Non Laverda might be useful. Another example comes from my Gilera thread, when I asked about high gloss metallic blacks one of the responses included a photo of an old school Mini project being painted black and red, and I was dying to know more about that project even though it was a car.... A lot of our forum members have some really seriously cool non Laverda projects on the go, I am curious, and I am guessing others may also be as curious as I am.

I think I will ask Rob to set up a specific non Laverda area as a trial and see if it gains any traction or not within the overall interests and spirit of the Laverda Forum and its members.

Wow, who knew how serious some get over this stuff. Maybe we are all become angry old bastards. I hope that the new section can defuse any negative pressure, and even reduce some of the self-censorships that might occur. To me, forums die when people get scared to post in case they offend. I have no interest in Aussie Rules football so I don't go to that thread much, but occasionally I do and it doesn't cause much harm to me if I read something not so interesting once in a while. BTW who posted that Mini info, I too am interested.
 
Well done and keep it up Paul & co. I'm happy to see a non-Laverda section, I've followed with interest your Gilera thread. Although most of our stable is Laverda, my last project was recommissioning a Honda CBX, present one a Velo and next will likely be a Bimota, so I'd have some content. Hells bells, I'm even not averse to seeing car build threads if they're interesting!
 
I think most of us on here know each other well enough to be able to drift away from the core theme of the forum without causing offence.
I personally get pretty bored if a topic of conversation remains constantly 'on topic', I like the mind to wander and at times, to hoist bullshit up the flag-pole and see who salutes.
I can understand how some can devote page after page on one specific subject - there are a few running at the moment - and that's fine in my eyes but I'm not that interested to that extent.
Must go and play with my new toy and don't forget:

Is this a Christmas Holiday thing, my hazy memory seems to think we tend to have these kerfuffles around Christmas every year?
 
I think go for it, most of us can think about more than one thing at a time, and our lives don't revolve around one thing. If people don't want to see it, then don't look, we all have that power. There are a lot of clever people on here, and their cleverness extends to more than just Laverda, for Instance I would like to see more of Julians car work if he would put up interesting things he has done. I don't really do forums, I have asked questions on the Ducati forum and received good advice but its not somewhere I go to more than twice a year, and the MV forum doesn't have this forums ambience , this forum is enough for me, and I don't do facebook, so I think its a good idea. Just my 2 cents
 
It's still a mystery to me why some people spit the dummy and leave because of a perceived "offence" by someone else. I see this forum as entertainment with a bit of useful info thrown in occasionally. Nothing important enough to get upset about.

Some of the most entertaining stuff I've read on here is when a thread topic goes haywire. So bring it on, I'd welcome any weird and interesting topics, although I thought that's what the "General Discussion" area already was.

The main problem I foresee with a specific "non-laverda" section is that some anti-social bastard might start talking about Laverdas. In that case I'd have to do a dummy spit and leave. :)
