This weeks joke

I don't know where this originates, but I sometimes see a logo or a sticker somewhere that has a text "God save the flatheads" and then shows two relatively long conrods crossed with pistons installed. The pistons have slightly domed crowns.

In this context a flathead refers to a sidevalve motor, no doubt a V8 at that. Long ago superceded by OHV and OHC motors. I don't know what the attraction is.
cheers
bazzee

I was thinking it may also refer to flathead V2, like 1930's or 1940's Harleys.
I guess the attraction is that they are just old, and V2 and V8 flatheads are considered to be part of some kind of tattoo or similar culture.
I consider this must be a joke, as the flatheads don't use to have domed pistons, rather flat tops or similar shapes to suit the shape of the combustion chamber. To my understanding very small domes on some flatheads are probably decades later after market stuff.

Apologies if I have put this up before ..... don`t think I have ........... but either way it`s always worth being reminded of it every now and again .

I think Delboy has now deleted this piece of absolute bollocks , but Matt at The Workshop managed to save it for posterity before he did ........

Unbelievably , Delboy has 256,000 subscribers ........ If that doesn`t depress you , then nothing will .......

........ Prepare to be dumbstruck ..............

As good as some of the usual instructions on this forum, such highest level of engineering in Australia is to build a Laverda engine following way:

1. Find a mysterious Laverda expert
2. Higher compression than standard
3. Hotter spark plugs than standard
4. Lower octane rating fuel than standard
5. Drill Dell'Orto jets to same size using a metal drill, because their size vary a little bit as standard
6. Use what ever engine oil (do not even try to meet the specs or look for widely used standards for cams and wet clutches, etc.)
7. Because the clutch use to slip with wrong oil, etc., install very thick Kevlar clutch plates, and when you pull the clutch, the parts hit somewhere in the primary
8. Do not use valve guard, because it is snake oil
9. Run-in the engine just by thrashing it

And then replace the pistons after every 50 000 kms and valve seats after every 80 000 kms, if you were able to go that far. (That would be a seriously poor result and a miracle if you still could do it.)

Actually , judging by the way the gears on my Mirage sometimes behaved ......... Delboy`s description of the way gear selection works could very easily be correct ..........

I remember paying my ten pence to the guy manning the toll bridge linking Llandecwyn and Penrhyndeudreath in Wales ........ toll collection guy was gazing in admiration at the impressive lump of Italian engineering which is the Laverda triple ........

As I selected first gear , the gear lever beat out a series of annoyed taps on the sole of my boot , whilst at the same time emitting a series of sharp , and very loud AK-47 type noises ...... causing toll collection guy to take a quick step backwards with a look of shock / surprise / awe / disbelief / wonderment ..... ( delete as applicable ) ....... on his face ...........

Eventually first gear was selected , and I set off across the bridge in a puff of blue smoke .......... The Laverda legend lives on ............

Thinking about it , all this noise and movement must have been the " teeth tips crunch " ........ the " sliding over the surface of the clutch teeth " ....... not to mention ...... " the moving gearbox shaft engaging with the stationary shaft " ........

......... which Del explained to us so that ...... " we completely understand how it works ..." .........

Next week ........ Del discovers the constant mesh gearbox , and quietly deletes all the rubbish he posted originally ...........

Delboy's Garage - Possibly one of the finest example's of the Dunning Kruger Effect on YouTube....... awesome shit.

Yep ........ It used to be that if you`re new to something , and making mistakes, there would usually be someone around working with you who would point this out / take the piss / shout at you ........ so you would remember ........ which would help you avoid making the same mistakes in the future ......

Now there are people appearing on YouTube who pass on mis-information , without anyone there to tell them to shut up , or to point out that they`re getting it all wrong ........

Any comments that appear questioning what they are saying , or what they are doing , are often quickly deleted ........

Another example is Stuart Fillingham .......... who once informed us all that if you continue to " click " when you reach the setting with a torque wrench , then you will be over-tightening the fastener ...... according to him , the more clicks there are , then the more you will be exceeding the setting ........

These people have thousands of subscribers ........

As Joseph Goebbels once said ....... " If a lie is repeated often enough , then people will start to believe it ... " ....... And he would have known ..........

Yes, Stuart Fillingham is quite an idiot isn’t he?

Typical Del ........ he will take a perfectly serviceable looking item .... be it a " reasonably good condition " ..... his words ...... final drive chain ......... or a perfectly good Suzuki Hayabusa ........ or a nice looking Harley petrol tank ............... and proceeds to completely ruin it ...........
I can't wait for the episode where Delboy cleans spark plugs by cooking them inside Yorkshire Puddings ;)

I'm not sure whether your comment above is serious or tongue in cheek, but to remove any doubt, Delboy's description is not correct. Motorcycle gearboxes are constant mesh.

Rocket posted the original vid of Mr Del explaining the workings of crunchy suzuki gearboxes, Cam, so pretty sure he's got the tongue firmly in the side of the mouth!
