Touring Croatia and thereabouts - Hints and Tips?

I dont mind tipping, good things come to all those who are worthy, what I dont like (as in our local pub meet every Wed at The Huntsman, Eridge Green Sussex) is the 10% service charge. Last week I had a steak, expensive at £25 (and they overcooked my asked for rare) and bought myself and Simon a pint at about £5, they forgot to add the service charge this time, but a few weeks ago I had a cheaper meal, a desert and about 5 drinks/pints they added the 10% to the whole bill, I complained of course, and got refunded (paid by card), there is no service charge on drinks, but realy? if they want £27.50 for the steak (£24.99 + 10%) then just put that price on the menu, Goddammit!

But stating 27+ quid for a steak might put off people from entering in the first place.

A direct service charge more than likely goes straight into the pocket of the publican, instead of the service staff who probably need it more than anybody due to the lousy wages generally paid in this segment.

Depending on service "quality", 10-15% is generally acceptable in most of Europe, even France... I've never had a french waiter/waitress turn down any tips. ;)

In Paris I frequented a cafe that sold smokes. In the que I noted the change from the shop attendant went into the customers hand, my change went on the counter every time.

So, I repaid the gesture by putting my money on the counter. The attendant grunted, saying something about Americans, to which I replied…. I’m Australian.

I’ve been to France numerous times, that one incident was about the rudest I’ve experienced.

Oh, apart from walking out of an ‘English’ bar, without finishing my beer because a waitress did her nut (in French) when I asked if she was English too …. her colleague was.

Well have been enjoying the islands off Croatia over the last week - it’s beautiful and small cities of Hvar , Split, Korcula and Stari Grad are lovely to walk around - cash is king and often gets a decent discount - cash machines are everywhere but the ones not supported by a bank take a massive commission twice , once to give you money and secondly on the exchange - lots of very rich people with yacht’s and big cruisers push the price of food and drink up ( non local Wine is exhorbitant - close to Paris prices ) Korcula is a real gem 👍 pics too big to post with crappy wifi

Or maybe you have been in France too long and have become mean? I have heard that the French farmer is astoundingly cheap. It might have rubbed off on to you over the years!
I've been in France long enough not to have to hear things

I never hear anything anyway, I look whilst standing back.

If you pay a lot for your wine in Paris, it's because you chose the wrong place.

I once left a cash tip of one dollar at the table of a greek restaurant in Chicago Ill, because the service was absolutely ruining the whole meal, the waiter was rude, abrupt, miserable, unhelpful and totaly glum, he chased me out of the resto waving the dollar bill and shouting "hey is this what you call a big tip from England" I said "no its a big hint, you should try working with a smile on your face" he got punchy and I stood my ground waiting his first move, which would have got him pushed violently and at least one foot in the nuts before he hit the ground, he backed off ( I was 25 at the time)

My digestive, as opposed to diogestive, system, is really insulted you UFB. 😢
However, as a positive side effect, I don’t suffer from piles as a result of straining to have a dump. 😁

Hello Chums.

Well, after the rain in Zagreb we packed up the soggy tent and got on our way. (the groundsheet held up by the way, so strange being on a water bed in the middle of a field).

Straight to the point.... The riding roads in Croatia are absolutely superb. The variety is amazing, from high mountain switchbacks, through mile-after-mile of glorious sweepers along the coast roads, to (when you need to move on) toll roads (which go though beautiful country side).

Our route so far has been like this and every day has offered good riding with frequent moments of 'wooo, hooo, this is the best road I've ever riden' feelings. The roads surfaces are generally good, sometimes 'race track' excellent - so grippy, clean and smooth you can just eliminate the road surface from your 'how fast can I take this bend' thoughts. Having said that, one mountain road did disolve into a farm track you would need a 4x4 to get across, so that was turn around time.

All in all... Highly recommended. A 'must do' I had never considered before, but il so glad I did.

Sorry, if I sound like the Croatian tourist board, but it's bit special for 2 wheelers here.

Oh, and Chris, the crumpet is excellent too. Eye candy abounds.

Negatives? In high season you will not move - local bikers say its just clogged up with tourists moving in a slow train of camper vans and not to bother.

Now heading north from Dubrovnik.
