Touring Croatia and thereabouts - Hints and Tips?

Well, after the rain in Zagreb we packed up the soggy tent and got on our way. (the groundsheet held up by the way, so strange being on a water bed in the middle of a field).

Straight to the point.... The riding roads in Croatia are absolutely superb. The variety is amazing, from high mountain switchbacks, through mile-after-mile of glorious sweepers along the coast roads, to (when you need to move on) toll roads (which go though beautiful country side).

Our route so far has been like this and every day has offered good riding with frequent moments of 'wooo, hooo, this is the best road I've ever riden' feelings. The roads surfaces are generally good, sometimes 'race track' excellent - so grippy, clean and smooth you can just eliminate the road surface from your 'how fast can I take this bend' thoughts. Having said that, one mountain road did disolve into a farm track you would need a 4x4 to get across, so that was turn around time.

All in all... Highly recommended. A 'must do' I had never considered before, but il so glad I did.

Sorry, if I sound like the Croatian tourist board, but it's bit special for 2 wheelers here.

Oh, and Chris, the crumpet is excellent too. Eye candy abounds.

Negatives? In high season you will not move - local bikers say its just clogged up with tourists moving in a slow train of camper vans and not to bother.

It’s great isn’t it? Like how wealthy Democratic states send money to poor Republican states so they can pretend they are independent of the federal government.
 
Time spent in Slovenia was also very good - an excursion north of Croatia. At the risk of another euro-funded road surface debacle, the surfaces there were also excellent.
