Got my bike licence in 1972. I had lost my drivers licence for speeding so was riding my Kawasaki Samurai 250 without a licence. When the 3 months suspension was up I booked a time with the local cop shop that did licencing and rode in on the Samurai. No questions asked. My instructions were "turn right out of the gate, left at the first signals, left at the nex, left at the next and back here - I will follow". Got the car licence back as well as one for the bike. Good days work.
Similar experience when I went for my truck licence in Kalgoorlie. I needed a truck to move houses/towns. I rented a truck from Avis and they let me have it the day before the rental started so I could get legal. Drove it to the cops and had a similar around the block experience exceptfor the "pretend you have a load on" instruction.
The good old days. Now half the feckers you meet on the road drive like they still don't know how despite the intensive training and testing.
