twin cylinder barrel won't come off

I would be trying the heat gun option, failing that a thin blade through the gasket. I have never needed to use gasket gunk on base gaskets on a twin but some people never assemble anything without it.

Not necessary to use sealing compound, unless you're re-using a broken gasket in the middle of the Atacama desert... nah, Laverdas don't break down.

At most, I use a thin smear of grease to aid future removal.  Weeps a bit until surplus grease has escaped, but is as oil tight as installed dry.

Ditto. Apart from head gaskets, I always grease.
Makes the gasket material more compliant as well.

finally just tapping at the right places worked. Tapped with a heavy hammer against the upper fins at the back and front of the barrel; and with a piece of wood in between to protect the fins against damage.
