I saw a replacement alternator in Germany a few years ago that was fitted to a triple (ground clearance reducing) and it came from a microlite aircraft. lovely little thing but maybe a bit on the dear side, he said it did the job well

Thanks Clem.
Yes I was thinking at this option too.. (mini aircraft engine alternator), very seducing.
What does mean "the dear side" ? (sorry..)

Cheers

Here you go Paul.

3-cylinder, turbocharged, in-line, 4-stroke, water-cooled, 88.1 Nm (64.9792 ft.lb), 24.5 kW (33.311 hp)

'the dear side' veux dire 'un peu cher', 'un peu expensive', Stephane.

The auto elec who gave me some tips on the ND one I used said they were common on ultralites (light aircraft). Not sure a teeny weeny one would inspire total confidence in the air!

Okay Thanks Piranha

Sure... I was thinking ultralites while writing mini aircraft :)

Mine is as fitted to Kubuto mini tractor. I have changed the bearings to high speed bearings. The factory ones looked a bit agricultural.

No problems with it so far.

So a 2000km trip away would be no drama, CK? How many clicks have you covered on the beast so far? In fact, we haven't heard much at all about how the spesh is going. Time to report in?

BTW, what sort of battery are you running? I'm tossing up between a Li-ion (includes Li-fe-po), gel mesh (quite a few reports of failure if left sitting for more than a few weeks off charge) or the good ol' screw-top Yuasa 18AH.

Motodd Rob is happy with SSD's - recommends something with 440 CCA. Shorai's get the big rap as 'best in show', but they're hugely expensive and all seem to come from the States, which is a major prob with shipping even without COVID. Not fussed if it weighs 4.4kg (gel mesh), I want reliability, ease of maintenance (doesn't require a flasho charger) and sufficient grunt to spin up an 880 twin with 10.5:1 CR. I'm running a powerful ND alternator, not the dynamo, so no drain at idle.

Point me at a thread of you can - bound to have been discussed many times over on here. Some tales of woe about Motobatt, so not sure about them.

Prepare for a shock, punny, when you price bike batterys. They have gone from stupid expensive to a full-blown ball ache. Lots approaching $300.

I have used Motobatt AGM batteries in a TRX850 with absolutely no problems. I am guessing that would be similar to the 880 special.

Actually SSB li-ion are around $320-350!! They look like excellent quality batteries and the talk is that they last a really long time - don;t mind paying more for that, assuming it's true! Their acid gel mesh ones are heaps cheaper.

At about 3,400Klms ATM.

Would I ride it 2000Klms with no drama? Well, if my body could handle it, I reckon the bike would ::) Very unfriendly for posture and body.
30 years younger would be handy, the new seat from Steph helps though.

Front brakes are too good, locks up very easy, espesh on servo type concrete. I can live with this bike, just for the looks and the sound.
