Lothar wins.
I've had a lot of problems with those carbs. Several ultra sonic baths to get a semblance of function and when I renewed the brassware, a persistent bad stutter if the revs were maintained around 2000.
It turns out that I'd had the wrong needles in there.
Out and about on the bike this weekend and twice when pushing the nail down to switch on, no juice. First time, after checking the fuses, I opened the headlight and juice returned without explanation. Second time, pushing the nail in several times got the juice flowing.
I'm guilty, it was a right mess in that headlight. Domino connections and old wires.
I had a look yesterday and found that the main feed from the battery was loose in a domino which had partially melted due to arcing.
All is now cleaned up with proper connections.
A 60km ride this afternoon confirmed that everything is ok.
The engine isn't very happy under about 2500 and then picks up very nicely. I attribute that to the 4S cam which is pretty peaky.
So, a very nice bike.
The front brake is bedding in nicely though I may skim the shoes yet.
Gear selection is a bit hit and miss going up into 4th. Will sort that when the cover comes off to put a DAM lever in.
Lastly, I left that bike totally original right down to the steel clutch basket which gets hot and flustered rendering neutral hard to select.
Will change that when I need to get into the primary side.
