Weather where you are?

Minus 8 C here in Germany, sun is shining

Not very brightly…. I do recall a few cold nights in Düsseldorf when I was there. I was busy looking at the white bicycles on posts. 🙄 Tripped over a garden bed in a park near the hotel, blood issuing from my leg filled my boot. 😫

Found a couple of bed warmers in the bar that night 😯…. cost a fucken fortune, as did the talkolm powder we snorted. 👯‍♀️

The room looked like there a murder scene in the morning.

Back on topic: Yep can get cold.

Extremely odd arctic cold front taking over Vancouver the whole next week, -12c at the ocean front, -20c inland. Locals will panic. Pipes will burst. Snow shovels will be sold out. Roads will be impassible because everyone has just summer tires. Last minutes flights to Baja will be snapped up in minutes.
Global warming sucks.
See you in Baja.

Hi Steve

my son is in Victoria on Vancouver Island. He and his spouse bought a huge 1920's Italianate mansion with huge grounds not far from the University. The "grounds" are heavily landscaped with all sorts of semi tropicals that he is so concerned about that he has hired a gardener to come in and dig a bunch of them up and move them into heated outbuildings to try and save them from the cold front.

Here in Calgary, ski hills are closed, airport is struggling, was minus 28 C and dropping first thing this morning, the weather forecast says we are going to be below minus 40C the rest of this week apparently. All the usual warnings about exposed skin freezing in minutes, extreme risk of frost bite, etc..

When it got a little chilly in Arizona, we decamped to Cabo San Lucas in Baja for a few weeks, happens to be "tropical" being just a little south of the Tropic of Cancer and about as far as it's reasonable to drive without excessive paperwork etc. - it's mid-60s F at night and mid-70s F in the daytime thanks to the Pacific and Gulf of Cortez fully surrounding the peninsular - may God help you people shoveling snow, I'm feeling for you!

I’ve got a niece and her family living in Calgary SW. they are not impressed.
My aunt and uncle live in Gordon Head just up the street, he laughs and confirms that the city does not even own 1 snow plow, not even one on the front of an F350.

Our family had access to exceedingly inexpensive (free) accommodation with our employers for 30 yrs beachfront condos in Honolulu, South Kehei, and,,,,,,Cabo San Lucas. Baja is close to my heart, riding dirt bikes from top to bottom over the years, spent a month in Los Cabos last January, good stuff. The dry air and warmth are very therapeutic, I’ll be back there in February.

Currently -12c and blowing snow outside, if I didn’t have projects with the ‘garage residents’ I’d be going nuts.

The long cold snap has taken a break here for a few days, the low pressure systems are at the latitude that they draw warmer air up from the south as they pass. It is around zero and a few under or over so the snow has melted, freezes, melts over and over. Mid December this often happens and they call it the "cake line" - caused by everyone doing their Christmas baking and warming the place up. The roads are lethal, semi-trailers blocking lots of highways as they go askew. Very easy to break hips walking around too, Norway has the highest incidence in the world apparently. On Friday it is back to the colder temps. Only mc of the sidecar variety get used these days but I saw a pic of a GSXR on studded knobbies, brave fella. That sounds bloody mean there in Canada.

Perishing cold here, snow on the ground and nights down to -16C depending on where you are.
I'm always pleased when the ancient, air cooled aircraft engines start at below -10C.
This time of year, landing on ice & snow requires aspecial briefing, as in "Don't touch the brakes: Don't even look at the brakes...!!"View attachment 68470
Not quite "Don't touch..." A good friend of mine from Minnesota once told me in Winter driving use the foot controls, esp the brakes, like there is an egg between your foot and the pedal. And of course don't crack the egg. ☠️

this weather is not funny any more. It is minus 43 Celsius outside. I have to be in Court for the morning tomorrow. I have to drive to a car park as near as possible to the the Court House in the morning and then walk outside from the car park to the Court House in a suit, bloody hell.......

It was -40 when the batteries on thermometer packed in overnight but the snow squeaked like -45 this morning.
I put a jacket over my t-shirt and packed firewood.

Jim
Hi Jim

the automotive 12 volt battery in my wife's Lexus hybrid is frozen solid, and the big battery pack is not functioning..... I have the Lexus automotive battery out of the car and thawing in the heated garage, has to be thawed out before even attempting to charge it. Not sure about the big hybrid battery pack, probably just going to leave the car alone until the cold snap breaks, we are supposed to go from below minus 40 Celsius to plus 4 Celsius for Christmas day...... I wonder how full electric vehicles are making out in this weather?

Before anyone asks why the Lexus and the other vehicles are not in the heated garage, it is small, not enough room to accommodate the 5 vehciles, and is full of motorcyles anyway......

most recent news is that it is 2 and a half day wait for road side assistance for a battery boost, and 3 and half day wait for road side assistance for a tow. and it is still getting colder yet......

Even the BBC weather service is featuring the ‘once in a generation’ cold snap in the US etc. for Christmas. Better put another layer on Jim. 🥶
