What did you do to or for or with your Laverda today?

Replaced the springs and rollers in the Mirage's starter clutch; all went back together ok (cheers to Grant for the thread direction tip on the sleeved shoulder/nut on which the oil seal sits). Still can't for the life of me understand how it allworks but am glad it does... ??? ??? . Shout out to Greg Parrish at DAM Laverda for his VERY speedy supply of parts (at very reasonable prices too!) 8) 8)

Specialist fork seals by Ariete made in Italy.

"Ariete has worked hard to produce a special rubber compound which tolerates the chemical additives used in fork oil and refined the design of the OIL SEAL LIPS which have a ground finish. $192.. .The Ducati dealer must have meant fitting them as well perhaps?

I threw the link up because there's some interesting info in the description,  ordinary oil seals you get from the bearing shop are made from NBR rubber for shafts that rotate,  which is not the best for forks that reciprocate, particularly where only one seal per leg is fitted. Not a job you want to have to do again because of early seal failure.
 
G'day Greg. No, $192 was the price quoted for the kit. Don't know how they expect customers to come back after charging prices like that, needless to say I won't be darkening their door again. The shop was full of nice shiny bikes but no customers, maybe the penny will drop.
Interesting what you say about the seals; rotational versus linear, when I visited my local bearing shop and asked for 38mm seals for the RGS and stated that they were for motorbike forks the bloke provided hydraulic ram seals mentioning the difference between the two applications.

Good onya Greg. I've been saying that for years, but nobody seems to take a blind bit of notice! Some supposed "fork seals" on the market from dodgy suppliers are normal rotary shaft seals. They'll work for a while, but will usually fail sooner than a proper fork seal.

Reputable suppliers will have a range of seals designed specifically for use as motorcycle fork seals. If you stick to well known brands or trusted suppliers you should be OK.

If you're looking for fork seals from a general supplier such as a bearing shop. Ask for reciprocating or linear seals. They have a different lip design to rotary seals.
For example, a TC4 type seal is a common designation for linear seals.
 
SKF also make a Low Friction seal that has already been discussed. These are double the price but quite amazing.

A bit more progress on the SFQ ... modern alloy swingarm squeezed in - wheelbase back to std to compensate for 25 deg steering head angle.

Had a good trip with my 1000 SFC to the Heftrich meeting and visited my mate Frank with whom I started biking and racing in the 70th, went home today. A nice 500 K trip- love the power development of the SFC but my RGS is the more comfortable bike for man over 60....

Got the ok on pilot jet size. 50 works well. She just purrs along on a light to moderate throttle. Happy days  (thumbup)

Had a great ride on Sunday, left Idstein in Germany and rode to the Ring, took a photo of the bike and moved on as it was all cars. Rode on over to Pete?s place.had a coffee and he and Dory invited me to stay the night . Went out to dinner, Dory driving her little Fiat 500 with Petein the back all folded up😂😂 In the morning Pete led me over to OCT where the bike had an oil change and a bit of a lube up of controls.
I the set off for Spa in Belgium and had a look there but again only cars so moved on into northern France trying to dodge some pretty major storm cells and failing on several occasions. Made it into St Quentin soaked. Will have a look around this part of the country today and probably look at jumping the ditch back to the UK tomorrow or the next day.
Bike has clocked up over 11000ks now😊😊👍
