What ear plugs do you use.

I have been using Howard Leight Laser lites , or Rhubarb & Custards as they are more commonly known.
They're very good at sound blocking and quite comfy and cheap- all good but I can’t hear anyone talk at a petrol station, in traffic and you do get a feeling of being underwater. I’m looking at reusable plugs with filters- any recommendations? Has anyone got custom made ones?
 
I got moulded ones but no filter - one set with speakers with 3.5mm plug and one plain set - I bought a cheaper set with filters but they still didn’t allow me to hear my Bluetooth thing - my moulded ones don’t either so I still don’t have a solution for hearing the sat nag

It may be useful to go down a grade or two. On construction sites I don’t like the top grade 5 or 6 protection because of the “underwater” feeling you mentioned and the inability to communicate properly. Grade 3 should be plenty under a helmet.
On the other hand, those ear squidgies of Mr Sock “sound” pretty good!
 
I have a set of Ear Mould Silicon ones with 3.5 speaker wires. My second set. A couple of tips, open and close your mouth as they set, that gives a better shape. I have an Orange one for the left and a green one for the right, which makes it easy to put the correct one in the correct ear. I got the sound as we usually end up doing boring expressway stuff and music helps with that boredom. I use mine 100% of the time. Phone on the bike dash with an extension cord to the tank bag and then a plug to the earbuds. So that's Music and GPS nice and clear with a big reduction in ambient unwanted noise, you still hear horns and sirens.

Are the satnav instructions coming from your phone ?
 
Yes, I use Waze occasionally, it's free to download and has tones of input from other users giving real-time info including traffic plus fixed and mobile speed camera locations its fast and accurate but the graphics look like a 5-year-old designed them and they're much harder to see on my phone but mainly the Tom Tom app for Androids which is similar in performance but the graphics are much better, should be as it costs money to use. The biggest issue is seeing the screen in bright sunlight. My latest attempt is with one of these. My old phone isn't waterproof so also helps with that but that built-in sunshade sold me. Take care as they come in 3 sizes and can be too small for some applications. BTW the big talk re seeing the screen is how many Nits your phone produces, 1000 nits is the brightness measure being talked up for seeability in bright sun. Mostly high-end late-model phones only.

It will if you live in America and don’t wear a helmet……and ride a Harley with open pipes. Hell, even if you live in a helmet state and you wear one of those shorty German looking helmets with no ear coverage you’ll go deaf from the wind blast.
