What ear plugs do you use.

There are about 20 people a year killed in hunting accidents in France alone, and that's only hunters. You can add to that people sitting in their garden or out walking.
There's 2 million hunters in France, excluding poachers of course.
A lot of them are drunk and of course armed and it's been proposed to breathalyse before hunting.

I live in Spain, work in Germany have family in the UK and friends in France.
I prefer to ride than fly.
I don't own a car.

Always use ear plugs for longer journeys as they cut out tiring noise.
I can hear my bike if I listen and I can feel it too.
Longer distance riding is all about fatigue reduction, for me anyway.
The less energy I use dealing with cold, rain, noise, etc. the better.
I also ride with a kidney belt and the best clothing I can afford to keep extreme temperatures and moisture at bay.
Anything that takes energy from me that is not dedicated to focus on the riding increases my risk of a failure to concentrate.
Like a battery with too many things feeding off it.
The more consumers, quicker it goes flat.

I use Spanish No Ton basic as they fit, are comfortable for extended periods of use and reduce sufficient noise to allow the level of hearing I like.
I tried fancy 'filter' earplugs without sufficient benefit to justify the price.
I felt I was paying for the fancy box as much as anything.
I'd like to try moulded ones but never seem to be in the right place at the right time.

I work in the engine room of a ship so headphone style ear defenders are used a lot and hearing tests carried out regularly.
I've lost some hearing ability somewhere, but it would be difficult to point a finger at a single source.
Loud music, tractors without cabs, bikes/helmet/wind noise, engine room noise. Who knows?

Do what suits you.
I too wear a Davida open face.
I've have and have tried full face but keep coming back to my preferred Davida.
Last person to criticise my choice was wearing T shirt, jeans and sneakers and wore no gloves but said I was foolish not to wear a full face lid like him.
Go figure.

Specifically noted your points about eye to eye contact and the friendly waves etc.
Ted Simon noted the same in Jupiters Travels or one of his subsequent books, I forget which.
But also smell and sight as I find both restricted by use of full face.
Smell burnt clutch/brakes? Quick check for vehicle that may breakdown in front of me.
Smell diesel or coolant? Watch out! Slippery surface. Etc. etc.
Anyway, as I said, each to their own.
Life is a lottery, where did I read recently on this forum of a tree falling and nearly taking someone out?

Absolutely- smelt a wrongly routed brake hose on the exhaust once and have smelt a diesel spill before I saw it.
I read a guy in the US got fined for wearing ear plugs on a bike- as you say , to each their own.
 
obviously badluyout of date (again) I am Paul, I tried to look up the anual figures for those killed whilst particpating in any UK gun sport and couldnt find the answer. It must be very, very rare, I would know about this if it happenned and we dont wear Hi-Viz when hunting in the field, maybe the people walking or sitting in gardens in France should wear Hi-Viz, how sad would that be? I do know what you mean about alcohol and shooting in France, have experianced it first hand, my preference is for early mornings at first light, the French seem to prefer meet at lunchtime, eat and drink together, then go out shooting!
