What?s the best and easiest to install aftermarket ignition for mk2 jota 180

I  do remember Keith saying he thought the Sachse build quality a bit iffy,  and i did have an unexplained faiure not long after fitting..misfiring...not sure what that was but had the pickups switched from optical to Hall effect. No issues in many years. Not cheap though, and i believe the whole generator is different now, when i bought from Red it was an adapted Kwack 250 i think which is great , but now even more powerful i believe.

The alternator is wholly Reds' development, has nothing to do with the Sachse ignition system itself.  But, it is the only one that lends itself to the Mk I alternator upgrade.

keeping my fingers crossed that your Redax ignition doesn't fail you in France next Tuesday Nick, but rest assured, my continental same day recovery will come and get you if that happens, but as for your mates six pot fuel guzzler? he can call the RAC, coz I aint ad a ride on it yet! like

Clem, the Jota has made many foreign trips including through SpaIn and the length of France..the ignition is fab, the sooner you fit yours the sooner you will appreciate the improvement.
It is unlikely to fail in France as I am on the 2006 Bmw R1200ST which is frankly a joy. Tim is on a 1990s 1150 GS I think..he would never risk the CBX in the rain..pId 23k for it!  Think his mate is on some kind of Triumph adventure thing. Its just a pootle to St Omer then Montrueill for lunch then back on the Chunnel. Mind you, some of our previous trips havent exactly gone to plan! Nice to be out and about though..pity those inclubing a chum who has booked a ferry to ride back from Spain..new 14 day isolation announced!!
 
I put the Ignitech system that Redax sells, yes it's expensive, but you get what you pay for and Red installs a timing curve that works, he has done a lot of research in that department, my 3C runs fantastic and don't even think about changing the curve, but it's nice knowing I can,
 
The Redax Ignitech system is only expensive because it includes a complete alternator replacement, Ignitech ignition (pre-programmed - so it is pretty much plug and play) and a Hall-effect pickup board and magnetic rotor. 

The Ignitech box on its own isn't expensive. If you choose to keep the original alternator and pickups, all you need is the Ignitech box, which is probably the most economical option of all. Last time I checked prices (about a year ago) Ignitech were significantly cheaper than the usual alternatives.

The unit itself is no more or less difficult to install than any other aftermarket ignition. Ignitech will provide the unit with a generic program for your bike. So it'll start and run as soon as you connect up the wires. However, all engines are different, and their default advance curve will most likely need a bit of tweaking to suit your bike. But it's not rocket science. If you have a laptop computer and an appropriate USB adaptor (which Ignitech can provide as an optional extra) then it's pretty simple. When (if?) you get to that point, there are plenty of people here who can give advice as to a suitable advance curve for your engine spec.

I installed my first Ignitech ignition 13 years ago on a Ducati. I knew bugger-all about ignition curves back then, but I soon figured it out. I've been a fan of Ignitech systems ever since. I've installed them on a heap of bikes. A couple of my own, but mostly other people's. They do a lot more than just make the plugs spark at the right time. They have a whole bunch of other functions and advanced tuning facilities.
 
Do you know what the designation of the USB-to-Ignitech plug is called, Cam? I need to source one for my TCIP-4 - assume i can get a lead from Officeworks?
 
Lothar beat me to it - You're after an RS232 9 pin serial - USB adapter cable.  The key thing to check is that it uses the Prolific PL-2303 chipset. Those without may not work or need drivers to be installed on your laptop.  Worth getting a decent length too!

  Disagree - only true if you order it complete with the pre-made Ignitech connector and leads.  Otherwise you need to buy the connector, terminals and crimp them reliably. You'll also need to get your head around base advance settings!!  >:D

Every Ignitech unit I've bought from the Ignitech factory in Czech Republic comes with the connector and terminals. It's true that you have to supply your own wires and fit (crimp or solder) the terminals to them, but that's no great hardship.

As you imply, some retailers of Ignitech units provide a ready-made harness for the bikes that they're supplying it for. A mate of mine bought an Ignitech unit for his Ducati a while back that came with a full plug-in harness. No crimping, soldering or figuring out which wire goes where. It was literally a case of un-plug the old Bosch BTZ units, plug in the Ignitech and hit the starter button. I did check his base advance for him though. The unit came with a default 10? setting, which was a few degrees off for his bike.

Getting your head around base advance is also not hard for anyone with a rudimentary grasp of how ignition works. It's simply the physical position of the pickups before TDC, which can vary from bike to bike. The ignition unit needs to know where the pickups are as a reference point to apply the correct advance through the rev range.

Actually, in my opinion, being able to set the base advance in the program is one of the advantages of Ignitech. All other ignition systems have a default base advance built in, which may or may not be right. If you strobe the advance with any other ignition system and find that the timing is off, you have to open up the timing cover and move the pickups to get it back to where it should be. With Ignitech, there's no need for spanners. It's all done with the software.
 
Re USB - serial adaptors: I've bought a couple that didn't work with the Ignitech units. I had no idea why some work and some don't until I read Rob's post today about the internal chipset that they come with. Thanks Rob.

A couple of years ago, I bought a bunch of Dell laptop computers in a government disposals auction. The reason I grabbed them is that they had serial ports that would plug straight into stuff like Ignitech ignitions and other engine management systems (like the ECU on my Benelli triple) without the need for an adaptor. I sold a bunch of them to other forum members for what they cost me. 
 
Soooooo, having read up lots on this topic now and Ignitec specifically, I am prepared to admit I was a seriously dull fu##er to even think of using the original pickups on my Series 2 180. (coffee)(clever)
So, the question now arises, living in the UK, is it only Keith who can supply a, (if I am going down this road, I may as well bite the bullet) complete system, Box, Pickups, Wiring, (although I can sort wiring out myself if needs be, that isn't a problem) anyone know before I give him a call, I don't want to waste his time, or is it only Red that can supply the complete shebang? (and that is hopefully, but I guess shipping costs from Oz are, "interesting!" to say the least!)

As far as I am aware, Keith is still the sole UK agent for Redax.  Red is, again AFAIK, the only supplier of complete pre-wired kits using Hall effect triggers for Ignitech on Laverda.  So if you talk to Keith he'll be able to confirm.

And again, IMHO, whilst Ignitech may qualify as the best, it doesn't meet your requirement for easiest.  To do any diagnosis/troubleshooting you will need a laptop, adaptor cable and a careful  read of the Ignitech manual.  Having said that, Red does provide very comprehensive installation instructions and the appropriate ignition advance curve.  And of course, if you get Keith to install, then you get a fit and forget solution.  8)

That's what I did, it was well worth it.

Six years ago, the ignitech cost me $153.00, $7.00 for RGS wire loom, and $16.00 for the USB to Serial cable. It was $53.00 postage from Czech Republic. I bought the USB cable from Ignitech because I thought for sure it would work, if the are selling it with the ignition. I did have to go looking for a driver on the interwebs though, which was no hassle.

My '2 cents worth' I installed a DMC unit over 8 years ago and have never had any issues never touched it not even once.

I believe it was the best thing I have ever done for the 78 Jota, it improved rideability beyond any expectations, starts instantly massive improvement in throttle response and control. Then again just about any aftermarket ignition will be an improvement over the stock Laverda/Bosch unit, just saying.

Had the same issue with them a few years back - it took an email from a friend in Czech to get a response. Even a 'we are very busy' auto reply would have been nice. But zip. Tippie had the same prob. Glad i haver my two bike's worth - if I have to build for a client I will get them from Red or DAM.
