Worrying noises.

Cam might be better placed to advise on this.

I very much doubt it. Modelling of harmonic vibrations in springs would go into my "too hard" category.

I suspect Terry's problem is the springs slapping against the insides of the forks because of the excessive clearance.

Hey Terry, I just had another idea. Try some preload spacers with a slight angle on the end that bears against the spring. That might be enough to force the spring to lay against on one side of the stanchion tube rather than rattle about.

Shit that's clever.
Whether it works or not, I love that "outside the box" stuff. And so simple!

Will try the cable tie trick, I have attached four small cable ties at 90 degree separation around the middle of the spring, will put four just above the tight windings and a further four near the other end of the spring.

Maybe the tighter wound part of the progressive springs are already acting like the angled spacer idea, and your springs are leaning on the inside of the tubes. Coat them with bearing blue and throw them back in, pulled out and see where the rubbing area is.

Well it's time to eat humble pie, the source of the worrying noise turned out to be the fuel cap flap (RGS) vibrating and causing a hell of a racket, no idea why it was more pronounced with the new springs in, can understand why it came on around 3000 rpm.
Goes to show, look for the little things first, just glad I didn't pull the engine down.
Candidate for DHOTY? :D

Don't worry!  I tried to lock the front door to my house with the car remote the other day.
So you have some stiff competition for DHOTY!

It looks like the change in springs changed the natural frequency of the front of the bike, exciting the fuel cap at 3000 rpm.
Who would have thought that?

Progressive springs are good, think I need a bit more preload though, 35mm of static sag.
Competition for DHOTY? Think I'll have to pull my finger out and come up with some more dumbarse problems :D.

      nearly PML, Chris!! I'm sure we all have variants of the earrings episode, some big, some small.

I pulled my SFC cam out once because of a loud knock and thought it had loosened on the flange (hoping it was that and not a big end!), only to discover that my belt drive gear on the ND Kwaka alternator was a tad loose ... Loctite and tighten the retaining bolt properly and problemo solved! 2 minutes vs 2 days!

Also spent about a year trying to trace the 'light sabre' (my then 9yo quite liked the noise  :-\ ) vibe in our old Hiace campervan - finally tracked it to the front sheet metal tingling against a reinforcing frame at certain frequencies/revs. Hunk of foam rubber wedged between 'em and bingo - bye bye Darth Vader ... 'Oh, I liked it dad!'  :P

Love that Superecheap ad tho ...

It's not just vehicles that baffle your diagnostic abilities.

My cat has a litter tray in the bathroom. Over a period of a couple of days, his urine started to smell really bad and was getting worse each day. Joanna and I thought he must have had a urinary infection (not uncommon in cats) so we took him to the vet. Hundreds of dollars in vet bills, scans and pathology tests later he was given a clean bill of health.

The smell turned out to be a dead mouse behind the bath tub.

Are you 100% sure it isn't your hips and knees creaking?

I think the guy that put unleaded in his Range Rover and then kept driving has got both hands on the trophy...

Range Rover Lives: nothing more than a flush, I love that thing.

May have to look else wheres for DHOTY man: I'm spruiking for the Mt T pussy hound (killed two vehicles with nil result)

Bloody Cat scans, they don't come cheap!
Neither do Dog scans (bummer, the synonym thing doesn't work any more!) ... don't come cheap either. We had the hound X-rayed after searching every other possible place for the only remaining Skoda (aka VW) key. Result:no key in dog, but $350 in vet's pocket!  :o :o :o

And to this day, the key has never been seen. The first key disappeared into the rapids of the Ovens River, courtesy of the then 10yo lad - went to get his inflatable floatie thing from the car and forgot to hand the key back! Add 6 weeks and $600 for two new keys.  :-\
