Cool Videos

Always find these old films interesting , even old Formula 1 ones ......... Team entrant / manager Rob Walker features .....

Rob Walker was the driver of the " other car " involved in the accident on the Guildford By Pass in 1959 which claimed the life of 1958 Formula One World Champion Mike Hawthorn .....

Hawthorn in his Works loaned Jaguar saloon had been racing Walker`s Mercedes Benz ..... Hawthorn overtook Walker just before a bend , lost control , left the road , and was killed .
The police who arrived at the scene advised Walker to keep quiet , so as not to incriminate himself ...... So Walker did , and didn`t ......

Hawthorn was involved in the horrific accident during the Le Mans 24 Hour race in 1955 ........ Hawthorn decided to pit his Jaguar , causing Lance Maklin`s Austin Healey , which was just behind Hawthorn , to swerve to avoid him ...... placing the Austin Healey in the path of Pierre Levegh`s fast approaching Mercedes Benz .........

The Austin Healey acted as a take off ramp for the Mercedes , the airborne car crashing just before the grandstands on the pit straight , killing Levegh ............... bits of Mercedes ( mainly the engine plus other parts ) then scythed through the crowds of spectators gathered just before the main grandstands , killing 83 , and injuring many more ...............
Many of those who had been standing up on wooden trestles to get a better view of the racing were instantly decapitated .......

The race continued , despite all of this ......... The organisers later said they decided to let the race continue because if they had stopped it , then large numbers of spectators from other parts of the circuit , unaware of the gravity of the situation , would head for the exits ..... thus hindering the emergency vehicles trying to gain entry to attend to the dead and injured .......

Mike Hawthorn and Jaguar went on to win the race ................ The following morning the French newspapers carried pictures of a smiling Hawthorn , with champagne bottle and winners garland around his neck on their front pages , accompanied by the headlines " Congratulations Mr Hawthorn , we`re glad you`re happy " ............. ( Or words to that effect ) .............

Just a follow up to the above ........ Stressful job trying to gain access to people`s bank accounts .......... Trainee scammers are often recruited from local colleges , as the students there have good language and computer skills .....

You can skip the advert between 8:25 and 9:25 ........

Nice to see what two state owned companies, Renault and Elf, initiated.
It would have been nice to have a mention for Guy Coulon who one sees several times in the video and who is the mechanical mastermind behind every French motorcycling competition success over the last few decades.
And there are a lot of them.

Interesting to see this as a timeline. Its press was less than stellar, you either win or fail.

I once read a report from Alan Cathcart where he tested one version of the Elf bike an remember that it was almost imposible for him to drive straight with the bike at low speed. But anyway till today I‘ m impressed from this bike.

All “funny” front ends feel funny! Leading/ trailing link or hub centre all feel remote or just different to conventional forks, the hub steering on some land speed bikes actually works left for right at low speed then goes back to normal as you get up to speed. The Elf concept built nowa days with a better rider thanRon Haslam could do really well- think of all the electronic anti this and and anti that they could dial in ..Not sure if the fairing would be considered legal for racing now, shame because it looks so cool.

Absolutely superb, very James Bond in fact, a potential dealer couldn't fail to be impressed by that film. I have had some of those bikes and they were excellent even though Paul will give them the thumbs down.
Amazing when you think that was twenty years after the war- the investment, technology and quality absolutely mindblowing. Paul will realise, no Honda, no Laverda. The Boss of my original Honda dealership came back from the Earl’s Court show in the 60’s and was so impressed by the Honda 250 he took on the franchise - his partner was a Jap POW and would have nothing to do with Honda. Charlie took on the Hondas at the main shop and the partner Ernie went down the road to run the Royal Enfield centre at the other branch- the main shop is still there selling Hondas.
Cracking video that I’ve never seen before- very Bond as you say, half expecting the scuba diver mass fight at the end !
