Atlas Questions

I must admit the carb etc is a bit of a mystery to me, and when I reconnected it once I had swapped the manifolds, which wasnt a 5 minute job either, I didn’t consider whether anything had moved or come adrift And I probaBly wouldn’t have noticed it anyway. It’s also a pretty tight space to work in, but enough excuses, I’m glad in the end it was a pretty simple fix. Hopefully Vince you will now get that ride before Christmas!

Perfect timing mate, just 1 day before Christmas. I just cannot believe , and this will jink it, how easy it starts and idles. If you read the blurb on the Atlas site on carb setup and balancing I was expecting some complications before that happened. And now to the important things, why does the horn not work? It took 2 days of looking to even find it hiding behind the headlight. How funny is that?

We have a NSW club ride on Thursday to Lagoona, I have a history with that place, I did a lot of serious trail riding in the Wadigans State Forest and Lagoona is the closest refuel to there. We would do 90ks of single track in the morning on Enduro bikes with 7l or 9litre tanks refuel and have lunch and do another 90ks heading back to the cars and trailers. Back to the Atlas, I know it's stupid but after fucking about for a week and a bit I am nervous about riding it, but I will have to as I need to be sure it's good to go, plus it defiantly needs an oil change before Thursday.

I am gradually replacing all the rusty nuts and bolts before they brake, you should see the ones holding the rear plastic mudguard on. Road salt over the years I expect, makes me laugh when people complain about Stainless bolts, there 1000% better than rusty ones.

Maybe around the block a few times will ease the anxiety, not far to push it … if it breaks.

Man sees a 8 year old boy walk past his house 3 times with a rucksack on his shoulder, on the fourth than man asks “Son why do you keep walking past my house”

Boy “I’m running away from home”

Man: Why don’t you go further”

Boy “Mum said I’m not allowed to cross the road alone, until I’m nine years old”

Might as well give it some stick early on Vince and see what's gonna break, then you'll be right as rain:D
(I forgot about you blokes club rides)

Today I have been doing some sag measuring, I know it would be bleeding obviously I will need heavier springs front and rear as I am well over the typical 80kg to 100kg design weight but checking is fun. It took some time to find where the rear shock preload adjuster is, it's up the top of the shock which is unusual as access is NOT EASY being as it's sandwiched between the Air Box and battery. So the bike now has 17mm too much sag in the rear, which means with the correct sag the seat will be 17mm higher going from 880mm to close enough to 900mm. That's right up there with MX bikes but add in how wide this seat is Mmm. That also makes it mandatory to use the Horse style mounting technic, eg left foot on the peg and leg over like you're mounting a horse. Same for getting off it. I can flat-foot it now easily, it leans a bit too much on the side stand and that will be a lot worse if it's 17mm higher. Time to do some thinking about when doing the harder springs and shock work maybe lowering it Professionally in the rear, been there before with Dirt Bikes and it's easy and a common mod for pros to do it. The downside is you lose ground clearance and stands need modifying sometimes, but if it means a foot dab saves a crash it's the better of two evils

I was having trouble pushing the bike around the shed and with Thursday's ride coming up I thought I better check tyre pressures. I went to the Michelan Site and discovered the T66 pretty modern 50/50road off-road rubber recommended pressures are a surprising 37F and 42R, really high in the Off-road world. Mine were 37 rear and 9 in the front, no wonder it was hard to push it about.

I was thinking there was no chance of getting more heat protection alfoil stick on tiles on the plastic side cover close to the muffler till I got a Boxing Day email notice of sales at Ballards Dirtbike Accessories. So fingers crossed that plus a foldable style funnel is coming. The type 3 exhaust runs very close to the oil dipstick and this funnel should help on a trip.

Bugger, that’s another 15mm higher seat height when pumped up!

MXstore also have the metal flexible spout funnel for sale, I've had one for years, ironically found it last night whilst looking for Whit spanners.

First ride video, was not so good. The video won't attach. Does anyone want to take it via email and post it for my Luddite self? Anyway, It went ok for about 2ks and then it wouldn't take throttle, bogging badly just off idle. It felt like it was running out of fuel so I tried Reserve and that didn't help. I made it to the local garage and added 10 litres and that also did nothing. I limped home by slipping the clutch just off idle in 1st gear producing just enough power to get home. I just dumped the oil for its first oil change and to put Reds oil plate with a drain plug in it. BTW thanks for that gadget, dropping that plate with a full sump was not pleasant. will try the simple stuff first like pulling the new air filter, it might need mix screw adjustments to work.

This bike has never run with its new CNC inlet manifold, or its new exhaust or its new air filter, it's bleeding obvious it's going to need carb adjustments.

Maybe you should put the shit it came with back on it seens as it ran before you got it and then start to add your proposed enhancements to it …

What, the cracked and leaking rubber inlet manifold and the exhaust with the rust holes in it? They are all in England with the old owner. My bet is it needs a Carby Whisper.

After that last helpful post, I was reluctant to post this in case it OFFENDS someone. But the last thing this site needs is LESS FUCKEN POSTING. So according to Grant who has fettled a lot of Atlas,s there Jetted very lean from the factory so a simple test is to see what happens with some choke added. It might shed some light on why it's doing what it's doing. Cannot hurt at this point. Grant's recommended jetting changes from his blog are to go up to a 65 idle from a 58 and go up on the main from a 152 to a 165. Be good to hear what your buddy did Piet regarding jetting changes. I was thinking the new air filter might be an issue but that would richen it anyway. I might be barking up the wrong tree entirely but it's worth a try. Thinking ignition wire insulation crumbling in the back of my mind.
