best temporary bodge for stripped engine case thread?

Most likely the shafts have side shimming for end float which is critical and should be in spec, removing the gasket will reduce end float. Also a gasket is much better at filling gaps. It sounds like it was a good call to open it up with what you found. Ever more hours going into that little monster. Hopefully it is a fun ride and completes the rally.

Good to see you too use Nutfuckers, AKA Adjustable Wrenches, AKA Crescent Wrenches.:ROFLMAO::eek::ROFLMAO:

PS I also had similar engine and gearbox internal bodges that slowly became apparent on an otherwise pristine Matchless 350cc Single that rode beautifully on the test ride and for several days after purchase.

with the adjustable crescent wrenches I have an unlimited supply of 10 mm wrenches........:rolleyes:

6 mm Keenserts sourced and installed in the Gilera split engine case, drill an 8.3 mm hole for threading the 10 mm thread for the Keensert, use compressed air to blow out the hole, thread the Keensert it in with a touch of LocTitle, hammer the locking pins in, done. NIce and solid, for 6 mm x 1.0 thread pitch. There are fancy install tools that I am too cheap to buy......

When working on Star Wars in the Marshall Islands a fellow tech had a crescent wrench with a thumb lock. It never loosened up or changed the size of the opening when in use. I can’t remember the Brand though. I also had a collection of Ford wrenches which were similar.

I didnt want to say it Paul, but doing it right may be the hrdest but gives the best result.
I have loads od adjustable spanners some metric, some imperial.
Pipefitters always called them "fit alls"

HI Clem

if I don't get it right the first time I always eventually get it right, the second, third, or god forbid, the fourth. I may not be good but I am presistent:rolleyes::rolleyes: If it had been a Laverda I would have ripped the engine back out as soon as the problems became evident, I just spent a ton of time properly repairing my Kawasaki H2 SX SE after it was damaged falling off the trailer, and just spent probably 15 hours sorting all the electrical issues on my 1994 Harley Electra Glide, but for some reason I was highly resistant to pulling the Gilera engine back out, the sucker just looked too perfect to take back apart.... Anyway, the Gilera engine is now fixed properly, I hope, just have to finish putting the bike back together and get it running again, then get back to the running in and fettling...
