Building my Jota

Looking fab.

Just a thought... These bikes vibrate, so ensure all your soft-faced fixings won't eventually compress a bit and come loose. A loose fixing causes a lot more damage than a tight one....

Copy that.  I have a torque to take them to so the rubber splurges properly.

Ok, so next up, after getting the engine off for a re build, and the frame to powder coating, was sifting through all the debris that was left in my shed from the disassembled bike.. I wanted to keep some original parts on, and replace things with newer parts.

For the suspension  at the rear, I went with Wilbers, and I have to say dealing with them was a great experience. I couldn't find what I needed on their website, but calling them was a really good idea. After answering a lot of questions about the bike, model, rider weight, if there was a pillion seat, or luggage etc, and what I wanted , they cam e up with a spec for me. Payment was made over the phone, and 6 days later I received the shocks

Front forks, I really did want to try and retain my originals, but the stanchions were needing to be replaced. I did a huge amount of research on forks , as to what I would do. As the bike needs to look period, for licensing in Spain, I couldn't put upside down forks on it, nor could I go with gsxr wheels. I asked around a lot, questioned a few forum members, and contacted some different suppliers. I was recommended to check with Maxton as well, to look at a rebuild with all new internals, and new stanchions etc quite rightly they quoted without labour, as they never know what will turn up, and what they will have to do. The price without labour turned out more than buying a new set of forks. I understand they would do a top job, dont get me wrong, but it just didn't make sense to go to such a great expense just to save the fork lowers, for this project.
So it came down to two companies. CRS in Hungary http://caferacersuspension.com , and E N products in Canada , http://www.e-nproducts.com. Both companies were quick to reply, and were very informative . Both could build the forks with the springs needed for my weight, I did like the idea of the Marzocchi replicas from E N, but the thing that swayed me toward CRS is the amount of bikes that were using their product, no import duties, and believe it or not a 3 day turn around from payment. The forks arrived, and they are completely stunning, the machining is excellent.
There seems to be a lot , and by that I mean around 12 different companies out there making replica forks,I would imagine thats because any patent for those forks must well and truely be expired.  CRS seems to be the most commonly used , so I went to tried and tested, rather than companies I couldn't trace a history of. I bought their 38mm forks for disc brakes, the thing I have to do now is design a bracket to adapt the brake callipers Im using.

I have Brembo P4-30/34 up front, the mounting centres are 8mm out on the forks, but the adaptor bracket will get around that . For the rear brake, I haven't worked out what Im doing, I like what Red has designed, so I think I am heading that way. Red is installing a hydraulic clutch as well. So the master cylinders I have for the front brakes and the clutch are Brembo PS16  and Brembo PS 13 respectively.

For the exhaust, I haven't got around to what exactly I am going to use, I have a set of exhaust pipes from Malcolm Cox, but I also found a new old stock Marving 3 into one. I know there will be a lotto people saying wtf with the Marving, but Im interested to see what its like, it ticks the boxes for a few things for me, its period, its different, and there is a story behind it. If it really affects the performance, I will look at something else, and well it will just be damn cool to hear what it sounds like too. I read that they were restricted a bit, but from the photo you can see, I put a camera inside it, and its pretty bloody open !

A great read for getting the working week going.

I'm following your story with interest - the forks got me into a state of tumescence  :D

hahahahah me too, a friend who came to see progress likened them in their box , to some cuban cigars

Its a forum time honoured tradition that a contributing poster recommends their own bike as the arbitor of taste and correctness for the thread they're contributing to so I give you...of course my Mirage's style.

I think you should stop the build now. My erection won?t subside :-*

Should I paint it viagra blue?  ....... nah I?m stuck on orange.  I don?t like the colour personally.  But it feels right.  I?m sure that will get eyeballs rolling and collective sighs.

Take that Marving tube, drill a lot of holes in it and find a nice lady to blow into it, closing holes alternatively with her fingers as she does and you can probably patent it as the Oumph, a new musical instrument.

The Marving is a load of crap. It's noisy and in common with the lady who blows, it castrates, in this case the engine. It gets rid of all ends, bottom end, midrange, top end.

the end !

Have to agree - that Marving thing looks pretty ugly and evil to me - no design thought gone into that one at all, I dare suggest. A really nice pair of open cans with a decent 3-1-2 would be my choice. Even something Yoshimura-ish to mellow the note. Doesn't have to be a 3-1.

I simply can't bring myself to paint the SFQ orange ... even though I have every right to and it would probably look effing great!

Talk to Red about the system he had made for the Motodd build. Wish I could justify the expense for that system.

yup, already have, didn't talk numbers, but I will see what happens

mmh build 1 build 2!!
I love the Toddy 3/1 on my Motodd but I must be getting old as I feel I need to be more considerate regarding exhaust note.

I just want to hear what the thing sounds like with the Marving, it will satiate my desire to hear a raw growl and bring the obnoxious teen out in me that used to be there when I was raining around on two stroke street bikes with race chambers on. I know that would be obnoxious in the real world and wouldn't run the bike with it as in spain its not good to get attention to yourself like that with the feds, but it would be cool to hear just because I can. I have the cox ones to try too, but they dont really do it for me aesthetically speaking, I like a bit more raw and un polished, so it seems the exhaust will be a work in progress, I have a few months to sort that out in any case, I have to say its been the biggest question mark for me since I started the project.

I hear you on that, I shoe horned an RG500 engine into a TZR 250 W frame back in the day, with a RGV 250 N  banana arm swing arm on it, I had some race chambers for the RG from Japan, boy did that thing sing at 3 am in the morning on power band going through my favourite tunnel

Now when I hear bikes doing a similar thing ,  that it makes me realise what a shit I was, now I just prefer to keep a low profile.
