Burning Cash for nothing

The pressure gauge on my compressor is not the best and the Digital Gauge I had died a while back so I went to Mx store and bought one made by Slime.

It didn't fit on my 3c rear wheel, so I bought one of these.

And it also doesn't fit, money, who needs it

I had one of those years ago, it lived on the rear connected all the time for years and then started leaking badly. Yes, they work but you do lose a bit of air putting them on and off.

this should fit

Yep. That's what I use. I have in the Jota's tool tray and use it if I have a problem getting a service station air chuck onto the valve. Although it rarely get's used because I normally do my tyre checking at home where I have an inflator that fits.

C'mon Vince, these are highly practical and great value: you lose practically no air unless you're a total klutz. HTFU... :D :D (and all other relevant smileys to ensure no 'offence' is registered. :-* )

I wouldn't leave such a device connected all the time - would fear e.g.
- sudden loss of air (the additional connection point could come loose)
- further I wouldn't like the centrifugal forces acting on the original valve

Altogether to dangerous IMHO ...

As I eventually found out, around that time a mate insisted I start using Steel Tyre Valve caps, not with the extension 90 as I stopped running the bike with it on by then. The local race blokes now also insist on metal caps as Jo said Centrivical force can open the Shader valve at speed. It actually happened to a local Guzzi racer on turn 1 at Easter Creek, not fun.

I?ve seen a rear tyre  valve collapse on a Dyno quite exciting, Big Phut , Flap, Flap, Flap.
I?ve used 90degree brass extender with no probs but I always use metal valve caps. Have also seen aluminium valves used in BMW tubeless wheels corrode and snap off.

I have used one of those 90 degree adapters for about 50 years, the same one, but I also found it very handy for charging air-con systems (DX type) where the fill points are very hard to get hoses on, transverse front wheel drive cars for example, doesn't seem to have deteriorated at all,
one of my better purchases, if I bought it that is, I just cannot recall.

I keep a brass 90? adapter in my tool roll, but never run it full time. They are useful at the gas-station, but the offset forces on a fast rotating wheel can be very high.

I use it for inflating only, never keep it on tire, but could be a good idea have it with you in your toolbox under seat, just in case.
If you attach it first at the gauge and then to the tire, and disengage it first from the tire an then from the gauge, you have a minimum loss of air, and, as somebody said, you can inflate a bit in order to prevent low pressure.

I have never understood how one of those tough plastic valve caps can distort in and deflate a valve. Try pushing down on the centre of one. They still come as standard fitment on new bikes afaik and would have been taken off the market after the first lawsuit in USA. It is not a requirement for racing here and plenty of people use plastic caps, never known of a problem. I suspect it was another problem on his Guzzi. I always use metal ones anyway, just from habit, but wouldn't hesitate to use plastic.
I use metal one piece 90 deg on all my cast wheels, they are sealed by an o ring and are screwed tight with a nut on the inside, supplied from a race team here.

I think it?s the thread going due to overtightening, doesn?t happen on metal caps

Are valve caps designed to maintain pressure (as in a fail safe) or merely to keep dirt out? My impression has always been for the latter but stand to be corrected.. ??? ???

Think originally designed to keep crap out Andy but reckon a good quality valve cap adds  a sort of 'belt and braces' security.
(notice the lack of smileys as I'm not in piss-taking mode)

So what happened to supporting your local supplier

Yep the cap is part of the sealing mechanism as Paul has said.. you should be checking your tyres also when they are cold so best place to do is at home...
Vince just get a small compressor ( can get neat hand held ones these days ) then fashion the end to suit your bike... and check the gauge with an accurate one and make a not and Bob?s ya uncle or aunt what ever the case may be in this politically correct world which we live in ... I?m off to ride my Lav.... well not the one was going to as the frame is cracked and club inspector has put the dont bring that bike out note to me.
