Cam Chain Shrunk!

And once again the discussion descends to the inane. Love it. Keep up the good work :D

Go to a pet shop and buy a mouse. Train the mouse to retrieve chain link plates (shouldn't take more than a couple of months - mice are quick learners) and send him in through the oil strainer hole. He'll need a little helmet with a lamp on it.

I smell a rat  :D

All part of the great tapestry of Laverda ownership, sometimes you want to burn them to the ground, till they come good and you go for a nice little ride.

For Andy: A football game was played somewhere in Aus last night, 'cockroach' alludes to the team that won (I think) ::)

If you have dedicated a whole day to getting it out then your simplest and best course of action would be to split the cases and get it out.

Then, I could retire on the income from retrieving chain link plates dropped by other unsuspecting shade tree mechanics.  Laverdas aren't plentiful in the States, though.  Do HonYamKawSuz chain link plates  look the same, or would I have to train the mouse for each marque?

This.
Then again if you are making such a song and dance about finding a link plate maybe you shouldn't try to split the cases.

Many thanks.. I have that book.

My point is that it's not rocket science and if you are having trouble removing the link then maybe better not start on the cases.
Then again, we all have to learn some time.
How far down is the engine?
You will need to remove the alternator and the inner alternator cover.
Better too to remove the primary drive chain, front primary drive sprocket and clutch.
Just makes re-assembly that much easier.
Removal of alternator (series 1 we are talking about?) needs a special alternator puller (nut on outside is left hand thread plus inner nut is also left hand thread), and the crank nut (right hand thread) on the primary side needs a long reach socket and a crank locking tool. And either an impact wrench or a long lever.
You need to remove the starter motor as there is also an M6 nut under there.
Undo all the M6 nuts first then the larger M8 nuts. Follow the green book.

Ok, a bit different then.
Don't need an alternator puller.
Some extra disassembly of stuff on left side of crank due to ignition triggers but generally same principle.

Alternator is out.  Starter motor off.  Primary cover off.  Clutch still in.  Green Book open.

However, I may have spotted the sucker on the steel 'shelf/baffle' under the crank with my 'eye-on-the-end-of-a-stick' gizmo a bought.  Video is not exactly 1080, so not sure that's it, but it looks like it got lodged in the corner somehow.  Major Magnet's mission is to go in there tomorrow to investigate.  The saga continues....
