Death of an SF2

I salavged an old dishwasher from a refurb job years ago, and installed it in my utility room in a corner away from the washing machines/tumble frier and freezers etc, it did a great job of cleaning engine parts, no salt in the pot or dishwash tabs of course, just Jizer on the parts first then highest temp wash. a great shame it packed up and was recycled, a nice thing to have but I would never buy one for the purpose.

Don't tell my missus Clem but I didn't buy one for the purpose either.
 
Well I've seen worse but it's still horrible. The pistons are well and truly seized in the bores and the gears are seized on their shafts.
It's a bloody shame really. It can be fixed I'm sure, but it is too costly for me to consider if I get someone else to do the work.

Parts I have going spare if needed.
Crank, all bits.
1 rod (the other I cut up and added some as a trial for the longer ones)
Crank output gear,
Clutch, complete. (probably)
Exhaust bits in pretty good nick,
Cams in reasonable nick and certainly usable,
1 or 2 cam followers,
Valves,
Oil pump.

What do you need?
All free if you need them.

PS.
Those gears look in good nick under the shit, clean it and look closer.
Freeing gears etc will not be too hard,
So what you can and ask here for help on things you can't do,
I recon if you have just a bit of mech savvy you would surprise yourself.

Julian, that's a very kind offer, I have just done a CB77 Honda that almost needed dynamite to free the pistons, it was quite similar in many ways to this engine, this is just a bigger more expensive version.
How do you free pistons that are a stuck as this? I had to be extremely brutal with the Honda but I had loads of good spares.
 
That gearbox looks fine. Which leaves you with crank and a rebore. And the bearings.
If you did the crank on the Honda, the SF won't be more expensive.
And a lot of elbow grease.

Soak the pistons in a mix of WD40 and Dot3 brake fluid for a couple of days, Then put a big biece of wood on the piston top and beat it with a club hammer, It will move! Keep trying and keep beating, you won't use them again so who cares how hard you hit them.

We have some aerosol spray stuff at work for stuck stuff like that. I’ve used it on stuck stuck stuff, and it works great. I’ll post a pic when I get to work.

Probably a mix of WD40 and DOT3 brake fluid ;)
 
Or else, cut the pistons with an attachment on a Dremmel type tool. It will release the tension. I did that once on a 750 with a piston firmly seized in the bore. A lot harder to budge than rust, no doubt.

That engine isn't dead, it just needs a bit of a clean. First, wash all the internal parts in degreaser followed by detergent and rinse clean. Then you'll have a better idea of what you've got.

As I mentioned earlier, to get rid of rust, get yourself about a kilogram of citric acid crystals. Dissolve about half of it in enough water to cover the gear shaft assemblies in that plastic tub you showed in an earlier photo and soak them for a couple of days. They'll come out looking like new. Don't get too anal about the concentration. I mix it at the ratio of about 1 kg of crystals per 20 litres of water and it works ok. Deep rust just needs a longer soak time than surface rust.

Once you've got the crankshaft out and separated from the pistons, do the same with that. It'll more than likely be recoverable. Send it off to Keith or Piet for a rebuild with new bearings, etc.

Food grade citric acid is way cheaper than commercial de-rusting products like Deox-C and is exactly the same stuff.
1.5kg of citric acid crystals is £7.90 (ebay link below).
1 kg of Deox-C crystals is about £20. So the price per kilo is nearly 4 times as much. The only thing extra you get is a plastic bottle with a label.

 
inside the engine must be really bad, I reclaimed this engine apart from two crank webs
bead blasted everything and was amazed how well it came up

I acquired this triple crank with other miscellaneous bits that aren't in quite such a bad state and this forum chain inspired me to ask the experts here if there's a reasonable chance to revive it, Clearly the pins, rods, bearings and primary end sleeve are gone but can the webs, slingers, and other bits etc be saved to a rebuilt crank? The outer webs have been tack welded to the pins.

Problem with a triple crank is that the pins are not a replaceable part - they are integral with the webs (as are 750 SFC). There is little chance to save those webs, but the non-pin ones wouldn't be a issue.
 
There are clubs that share workshop facilities and have members who know a lot about mechanical rebuilds etc (maybe not Laverdas but sound engineering) perhaps look one of these up in your area and join a shared endeavour is always more fun take it on IMO beats the hell out of golf!
