Disc carriers

A lot of the early bevels used solid cast discs (M10 4-bolt), as did Guzzis (maybe the same or could be M8 6-bolt I think), but the 6-bolt hole (PCD) pattern is the same. I used discs off one or the other when I went from drum to disc front and used sleeves and drilled extra holes to allow fitment to the SF2 hub. Offset was the same from memory.
 
6 x M8 bolts on 101.6mm (4") PCD. I just made a rear disk carrier for a mate's Guzzi yesterday (same bolt pattern) so the dimensions are still in my brain.

Oddly enough, the 10" Morris Mini wheels that I refurbished last week have the same 4" PCD for the wheel bolts, but only 4 holes. So I was able to use the dummy hub that I made years ago for mounting Brembo disk carriers on the lathe to also mount up the Mini wheels to check for run-out. Although I could only use 2 bolts.
 
Are brake discs a generic item, like a tyre, chain or lamp? If so, what are the vital stats for our machines?
I guess I mean: how easy is it to find replacements?
 
The 6-bolt pattern and PCD (pitch circle diameter) is common to many Italian bikes (and very close to Japanese (to the point that i could use a Kwaka alu disc centre with a Brembo cast disc attached to it; the M6 bolts fitted with only a small amount of filing.
I think Yamaha 6-bolts might be very close to Italian hub specs as well. Do Zanes have a 6-bolt pattern and fit the Breganze front hub?

The short answer is no.

Slightly less short answer is that some Italian bikes used the same brake supplier (Brembo) as Laverda, so there is some limited interchangeability.

If there's any commonality between different brake manufacturers (as PB2 found in the previous post) then it's probably nothing more than coincidence. I don't reckon there was any planning or cooperation between manufacturers involved.
 
Also the same as Bevel Ducatis from the same era. I guess they used the same Brembo equipment.

All the Ducati bevels that I can recall had discs that were all steel. No disc carrier.

They had aluminium carriers from about 1981. Have a look at MHR or S2 models from about 1981, up until they ditched the bevel engines in 1985 (or was it 86?). They were the same 280mm diameter and same offset as the all iron disks, so were a bolt-on upgrade. I never checked the weight difference, but I presume the ones with the aluminium carriers are a bit lighter.

My 1985 MHR (below) has cast iron disks on Aluminium carriers.

Of note is that many bigger Yamahas use Brembo as std fitment - master cylinders if not more.
Yamaha once held a big stake in Kelsey-Hayes/Brembo. Don't know if they're still involved.

Especially italian-produced Yamaha models used a lot of regional stuff such as Brembo, CEV, etc.

Cool. I had an MHR but it was first version with all steel. Is yours a 6 bolt carrier same as Laverda? The earlier Ducks were 4 bolt.

6-bolt and aluminium carrier on the SSD, right from the start in 1979, Jim. The early (1977-79) standard Dramah was 4-bolt and single piece disc and mount, but that changed in 1980.

RGS's did have solid cast iron discs (no alloy carrier) at times,

Cam is correct 27mm offset for twins and triples, and 280mm diameter,

on Zanes it is 320mm diameter but 7mm offset and differing bolt pattern.

If you want 320mm discs and alloy carriers with 27mm offset and six bolt Breganze type bolt pattern PCD, for your twin or triple, and be able to reatin the spedo gearbox without drama, you need a set from a Cagiva 500 GP bike, easy innit?

This is how I fitted 320mm discs to my SF2 hub ... no small amount of work. The underside is where it got really complicated. In hindsight there were many other easier ways to fit them plus the 22mm axle for the OW01 front end!! But I learnt a lot about my lathe and the finer points of machining (from very little base knowledge).
