Espresso machines

I drove my van pretty much non-stop from Melbourne to Brisbane a few years ago (tried to have a nap near Coonabarabran but couldn't sleep). Several cans of Red Bull gave me wings. Only time I've ever drunk the stuff.

48 spoons of sugar!
Yeah, I seem to recall it tasted pretty sweet, but it was preferable to falling asleep at the wheel.

I just worked out that that trip was in 2014 (it doesn't seem that long ago) and I haven't drunk the stuff since then. I don't drink Coke or any other fizzy soft drink for the same reason. Way too much sugar in it. Just walking past an open can will rot your teeth.

I used to occasionally drink diet coke, but I'd dilute it with rum. Sadly my alcohol drinking days are behind me. It's a pain trying to maintain some semblance of health as you get older. You have to give up all the stuff you like doing.

I used to Trail Ride with mates who played Touch Footy at a high level competitively. They would do weekend competitions that had them playing 6 and more games a day for 2 days straight. Their secret was some pill they got from a Health Food shop, I would usually be fading fast on a Long Day on the dirt bike and on one occasion I tried one of those pills at my usual time to stop 2pm. The ingredients apparently are in these boosted performance Drinks available everywhere these days. From memory, they contained caffeine and guarana with varying amounts of sugar protein, vitamins, sodium and other minerals. I was absolutely amazed at its effect, I just didn't want to stop riding even as it got dark and we were a good 4hr drive home. I was bouncing off the walls and felt fantastic. That couldn't be a good thing, didn't do it again.

If you didn't get a downer on the other side of it then it would be a total winner, Vince, and you should have used it daily! Most drugs that make you feel fantastic have an equal and opposite 'other side'!

I was in my 20s, lived on the lower north shore and did what everybody did back then. I didn't notice much the next day. I do remember that powerful effect though. It's in cans of soft drink at my local petrol station these days. I have no idea what quantity or purity that pill had in it.
What drinks have guarana in it?

Bombastically named energy drinks such as Full Throttle, Monster, Red Bull and Rockstar all contain the herbal supplement guarana. The compound is also found in over-the-counter weight loss products, and it's been marketed as an aphrodisiac

A friend was working in pubs and clubs when using highly caffeinated drinks as mixers became popular, eg vodka-and-redbull. It created a new and dangerous problem of dealing with wide-awake drunks.

I put this off as long as I could. It was time to do something about the single group lever Urania machine on my kitchen bench . I bought this machine about 12 years ago, it’s in dire need of some love. Being as it’s 60 -63 odd years old. It’s pretty easy to pull apart. But one pipe bit the dust as it was completely welded in with lime scale I had to cut it as it was twisting as I undid the keeper nut. Better to replace the copper pipe than bugger the lever group it was in , you can see why. With all the lime scale in it. The boiler came apart pretty easy too. Tomorrow it will all get an acid bath and be ready for assembly later next week. The really cool thing is the mercury switch in the last photo. It still works incredibly well. You can to this day still buy all the spares, with the exception of the mercury ampules, but it’s cool you can still get the bellows.
