Hello all - Newbie Laverda owner

Must be shit load of them available 2nd hand as just about everybody I know that owns a triple has upgraded the ign.
If they're actually worth money I've got some for sale then :D

when I was trying to sort my BTZ ignition a few years ago, I put out a call for boxes from friends far and wide and was very lucky to be gifted about eight of unknown quality from multiple sources across Europe, I tried them all (very tedious) and some worked but would not properly advance, others were simply dead, but I did get two that were brill and are still in use.

What I would say toy you is this, when you get your replacement box you must strobe the ignition to check that it fires at TDC (low rpm/ tickover) and advances to the full 32 (42 typo removed) degrees above about 2300/3000 rpm, (it varies with pick up gap, which in all cases must be equal and 8 thou is a good measurement)  the main thing here is that you MUST DO THAT ON BOTH SYSTEMS, so one check on an outer and one check for the inner, if all checks out well, then bingo, if you don't have a strobe then YOU MUST GET ONE by any means, it is vital that you check the advance for both systems, or you will be buying pistons at more than 200 quid a pop, plus re-boring/stripping/gaskets/rebuilding etc etc, and the inevitable "while I'm at it" syndrome

good luck

There goes my thoughts of a plug and play solution ... bugger!
unfortunately, Merlin (Dave) who lives locally had boxes numbered 1 217 280 034. Mine ends 042. Sounds like a new system is the way to go.
At the risk of instigating a 'what oil/tyres do people use' free for all opinionfest, I'd be interested in peoples experiences of what's available. I already have a vote for a DMC system as a minimal modification system. Would be great to hear pro's and cons of each?

I'm sure this info is on here somewhere, so apologies for that. I'm not having much success with the search box on here.

I have a pair of the boxes you want, and wired connector plugs for them. One of them works fine, the other is dead... I know not which is which!!

You, or anyone else is welcome to them.

Thanks James. I've messaged you direct.

Thanks to @OneThinBloke on here, I received 2 boxes in the post (great, thanks James). There was a mystery duffer, that I snuffed out through a process of elimination. This has allowed me to find the duffer on mine too, which is great. Having checked with a strobe, they both appear to advance similarly (about 32mm on the casing, not degrees). One around 2800 on the tacho and the other around 2000.

Is this normal?

Cheers,

Julian

Is this normal?
No. They should be similar
If you did as Clem suggested, then both pickup gaps are identical?
That only leaves (i) wrong BTZ box (you can check the part numbers, or better, swap them over  and see if the issue follows the box)
(ii) wrong pickup polarity (check by moving metallic screwdriver blade rapidly away from the magnetic pick-up poles with ignition on and earthed plugs - should generate a spark)

(about 32mm on the casing, not degrees)
No idea what this means

32mm on the outer case is roughly equivalent to 22 degrees of flywheel rotation ... IMHO.
I use 46mm (on the case) as 32 degrees and interpolate if needed.

Yes. Odd that mine correlates number wise, but in mm on the casing!

I should patent this! "scribed aluminium tape"

Instructions - remove RH cover .. allow for parallax

Cunning!
After making and fitting a proper 2 stage foam filter (there was none fitted) along with the new (old) BTZ box, I topped her up with super unleaded and took her for a proper blast. She ran like a dream and ticked over lovely on my return home. RESULT!! Think I?m finally seeing what the fuss is all about. What a pleasure!

New silicone breather hose and catch tank fitted. A tad Scottish, but it was orange, and you can never find a Tango can when you need one!
