I’ve been wondering the same thing.
I’ve been listening to world music on iHeart radio. Purely thinking I’d come across something different to the normal stuff we have in Australia.
Nope, in the main, it seems we listen to the same thing everyone listens to.
Take ‘classic rock’ Eagles, Jimmy Barnes, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Elton John, Crowded House …….. to name a few, are played all around the world.
Some ‘power’ out there must be pulling the world music strings.

I’m thinking tango, all the different types of African pop and rock, rock en Espanol, things like that, I heart is basically corporate radio and is utter crap! Try Radio Paradise instead….. or KCRW online feed.
I don’t see how anyone could think Fela Kuti or Ali Farke Toure was crap for the masses! Or any other African musician for that matter. If anyone is getting rich off their music, it ain’t them!

The Kings are an interesting case, French, but perform in Catalans. They are the children of Spanish gipsies who fled Spain during Franco’s reign of terror. Are they French? Their passports say so. Is their music French? Non. Like Django, French citizens, but musically not French at all.

Just as a matter of interest , a bloke who drinks in the same pub as me in Bristol was joint founder of WOMAD back in 1980 ......Just like films, I love to see how other Culture's minds work.
He and another chap involved with arts and music mag Bristol Recorder , contacted Peter Gabriel , who lives nearby just outside Bath , for an interview ......... during the course of their meeting , Gabriel mentioned his interest in setting up a festival featuring World Music ....... The three of them made this idea a reality ( financed by Gabriel ) .......
Current location for this annual shin dig is Charlton Park , just outside Malmesbury ....... Only about half an hour from where I live .... ( clear run , full use of the gearbox ) .... but I have never attended .... No interest in all that stuff , really ........
BTW .......... Peter Gabriels " Solsbury Hill " single features Pete pulling on his Timberlands , and trudging his way to the top of the Iron Age Fort , to take in the view of the City of Bath below ........... Several years ago Pete applied for a Public Path Diversion Order to stop people walking past his house .......
So while he`s not adverse to trampling over other people`s property , he`d rather not have you wandering past HIS front door , thank you very much ........

Phil Oakey was into Triumphs (T160 Trident among others). Then migrated to Laverdas including that Spondon special mentioned earlier. There was an article on him in one of the British magazines back in the day and another just on the Spondon. I remember Roger Winterburn saying how he took a hacksaw to the very expensive RGA (I think) fairing.
Oh and Daft Punk were a superb couple of musicians in (gasp) this century, and they're (double gasp) French. Something of an exception though, successful French modern musicians getting success outside their homeland, bit like Air (mentioned previously) at the end of the last century.
